You might know ceremonial cords from handfasting, but a cord can mark so many other moments of meaning.

For this series, I’m exploring renaming ceremonies through five different colourways and four recurring charms.

🗝️ The Key — I decide who I become.
🪞 The Mirror — I recognise myself.
❤️ The Heart — I love and care for myself.
⭐ The Star — There is a future in which I am fully myself.

Each cord expresses a different emotional experience of choosing a name:

🌅 Tenderness
🌌 Claiming
🌱 Growing
🌙 Release
🔥 Declaration

Because there isn’t one way to choose a name.

And there isn’t one way to mark that choice in ceremony.

My ritual tools aren’t only for handfasting. They’re made to hold meaning around all sorts of thresholds, commitments, changes and beginnings.

Over the next five posts, I’ll show you each cord and the intention behind it.

There’s something I love about the beginning stage of making. We have a vision, but everything is still possible.

At this point a cord is simply thread, ribbon, hopes and dreams, and a wing and a prayer.

No weaving yet.

No finished piece.

Just the beginning of a story waiting to unfold.

Each handfasting cord grows from these first quiet decisions, the colours, the textures and the intention behind every choice.

I think beginnings deserve just as much attention as endings.

There has been something quietly taking shape behind the scenes...

For a while now, a friend and I have been working on a new project that feels like a natural extension of everything I love about Solar Crone.

If you’ve been here for the stories behind the objects, the folklore, the symbolism, and the slower pace of making, I think you’ll feel right at home.

It’s only a short while before we share more, but I’m so excited to finally let you know that something new is on its way.

Happy Lammas. 🌾

The first harvest is a time to pause, reflect and give thanks, not only for the food on our tables, but for the quieter harvests too.

The lessons we’ve learned.
The relationships we’ve nurtured.
The creativity we’ve allowed to grow.

As I share this freshly baked Lammas loaf, I’m taking a moment to appreciate the small beginnings that eventually become something meaningful.

However you’re spending today, I hope you find a little space for gratitude, rest and celebration.

When someone first sees a handmade piece, it is often the materials that catch their eye.

The colour of a thread.
The shine of a stone.
The texture of the fibres.

And I completely understand why; those details are part of what makes a piece beautiful.

But for me, the process begins before any of that.
It begins with consideration.

Before I choose materials, I think about what I am creating and what I want the finished piece to express.

From there, the choices begin to take shape.

A colour might complement the overall feeling of the piece.

A stone might connect to a traditional correspondence or personal meaning.

A particular fibre might bring the texture and movement that the design needs.

I love working with traditional symbolism, but I never want the meaning to exist separately from the craft.

The materials are not simply added onto the piece.
They become part of the making itself.

Every bell is built slowly, one decision at a time.

And that is one of the quiet joys of creating something by hand.

One of the things I find most inspiring about ceremonies today is the freedom couples have to create something that genuinely reflects them.

For a long time, many weddings followed a very familiar pattern. There is nothing wrong with that, traditions become traditions because they hold meaning for people.

But I also love seeing couples explore what happens when they pause and ask:
“What feels right for us?”

This styled shoot was a beautiful example of that.

A historic setting.

Thoughtfully chosen details.

A collection of talented makers, each bringing their own craft and creativity together.

From the dress and styling to the flowers, stationery, photography and handmade elements, every detail helped create a story.

For my part, I was honoured to contribute the handfasting cord.

Handfasting has always fascinated me because it is such a tangible symbol of connection. The cord itself is made slowly, through repeated movements of weaving, binding and finishing and then it becomes part of a moment that carries meaning for the people holding it.

That is one of the reasons I love creating these pieces.

They are not simply objects for display.

They are made to become part of someone’s story.

Whether your ceremony is traditional, alternative, gothic, colourful, quiet or completely unlike anything people expect, I hope this reminds you that meaningful celebrations do not have to fit into one shape.

Keep the traditions that speak to you.

Create new ones where you need to.

The most important part is that the ceremony feels like yours.

When people see a finished piece, they often notice the materials first.

The stone.
The colour.
The textures.

And I completely understand why, those details are part of what makes handmade work so beautiful.

But for me, the process begins somewhere earlier.

It begins with intention.

Before I choose the materials, I think about what the piece is being created to represent. What feeling does it need to carry? What story is it helping to tell?

From there, the materials become part of the language of the piece.

The birthstone-inspired bells are influenced by traditional correspondences, but I never want them to feel like a collection of meanings simply placed together.

The weaving, the balance, the texture and the finishing all matter.

The symbolism is woven through the craft rather than added afterwards.

That is what makes each piece feel complete.
