Q: "If you had to pick just one colour pellet and one groundbait mix to cover all your commercial fishing, what would it be?"
🗨 Nick Speed says: "Especially when it comes to “bait”, I try to keep my bait choice as simple as possible, so when we’re talking about colour choice, in my opinion there’s only one “base” colour I stick to especially with commercial fishing, and that’s green.
For well over 20 years now, I’ve always been a massive fan of implementing the colour green into my bait armoury. I suppose a lot of this confidence comes from years of using Dynamite Swim Stim Betaine Green groundbait as my main groundbait for approaches such as the method feeder and margin work, and of course the confidence of knowing that this particular colour is inviting for fish to settle over and feed with confidence, and as a result, I then wanted to expand this formula into other areas of my bait choice, such as micro pellets.
So again, for many years I’ve been a massive fan of soaking the colour of my pellets to a tinge of green, by using Betaine Green Pellet Soak, as not only do I believe that this additional additive and colour gives my pellets that extra attraction from the norm, but again, it’s also a “natural” shade that seems to appeal to all species of fish.
The most important factor to also consider is contrast, so especially with a method feeder, green groundbait/pellets, really does amplify the colour of my hookbait, for example, yellow 7mm Dynamite Speedy Washters which in my opinion, invites fish to intercept my hookbait quicker…
This principle also applies to margin fishing, where you might be feeding groundbait down the edge and using hookbaits such as bunches of maggots or corn over the top..
For this reason throughout the majority of the yearly seasons, I will always use green as my base colour for both my groundbait and pellets, and it’s only really in the depths of the winter where I’ll change my groundbait to a darker mix (such as Black Swim Stim) to marry with the clarity of the water, and of course the species that are in more abundance during the colder months, such as roach, skimmers, and the occasional F1.
I hope the biggest part of the above you’ll take away and use within your fishing armoury is, keeping your colour choice logical, and natural for the surroundings your faced with…"
