September's book club pick is The Summer Book by Tove Jansson, translated by Thomas Teal.

Extending the summer into September and it promises to be a palate cleanser for some pretty bleak books we've read at Book club recently. Choosing books for book club has been a real eye opener for me for the type of book I enjoy. The bleaker the better apparently....

I can get behind something fun or happy though, promise!

About the book:

Exploring detailed accounts of historic crime is one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of a society and its culture decades and centuries later. Of course, stories of crime and deviance are intriguing in their own right; but through understanding the context in which they were committed, how they were made sense of, and how communities and officials responded to them, we can gain incredible insight into life at that time and place.

On 20 October 1799 at Pensieri in Anglesey, a fire breaks out, destroying cart house, corn, haystacks and timber. A young woman is seen running from the scene – but what secrets drove her to set the fire?

Uncover the tales of real-life murders, manslaughters, assaults and arson that took place in Georgian Wales and the borders, which together give us a window onto life for ordinary, common people – whose lives would otherwise be lost from the historical record. Β

From courtship rituals to the value of horses, Georgian attitudes to s*x work and insanity, vulnerable adults and fraud, each chapter uses documents from Wales’s Court of Great Sessions to illuminate the past.

About the book:
BIG MAN follows the life of Big, a middle-aged, Black British gay man who lives a gentle life with his boyfriend, Little, in their home in East London. Big and Little enjoy evenings out and group holidays with friends, as much as practising yoga together at home, and running side by side along the Hackney canals.

Big came of age in the club scene under the watchful eye of Mother, an African American trans woman who made a home and a name for herself in London, her house a refuge for wayward q***r youth like Big. When he finds out Mother is releasing a memoir, the two reconnect after decades of distance, and Big finds himself having to confront a long-repressed assault that opens old – and new – wounds.

A tender, daring novel full of gentle humour, BIG MAN explores themes of identity, aging, s*x, family, and trauma, turning a lens on what it means to age as a q***r person, while being a double-edged love letter to the people and places that make us.

I have been watching The Free Q***r Library on Instagram for a while now! I love what they are doing so I wanted to shout them out here!

Going forward we will be donating a book from every event we do here that has a q***r aspect. The first is from an event we did at the start of July for Mirrorwoven. A gorgeous sapphic YA fantasy!

We've got Dean Atta coming to talk to us in September so I will be dropping off a copy of Big Man after that as well. Come along to the event if you can!

By a twist of fate the person behind the Free Q***r Library came in for a coffee while I was dropping off the book! It was lush to meet you!

You can find this at Oat and Bean or I believe at ArtHole as well.

Happy reading πŸ’š
