A busy time in the workshop!
Thanks to all my customers over the last month or so for being patient, its always a busy time of year & this is the first year I've learned to say No ... sorry!
Last few year I've always tried to squeeze folk in for 'small' jobs, which never turn out to be small & then I fall behind on jobs I have booked in & folk end up waiting longer than expected, I then get stressed & have to close my books to get caught up.
I'd say we're around 3 week wait for booking jobs in, hopefully sooner if everything goes to plan.
Also got a few days Holiday over this next couple of week.
If you have any events or holidays planned for the Summer & you want your bike sorted, you'd be aswell to get it booked in.

Cheers folks

I'm not one for calling out other Shops or Mechanics, as I know mistakes can be made at times, but this is taking the p*ss!

Customer got intouch around 4 week ago wanting the Dropper & Headset looked at on a YT Capra, I explained it could be couple of week as its a busy time of year. He was keen to get it sorted for his Son, so said he'd try elsewhere, I think one shop tried to sort the Dropper (unsuccessfully), He got back intouch & I put him on my list of jobs.
I got intouch earlier this week saying I could get the bike in, he said it was currently in at a local Automotive Superstore to get the Headset looked at as his Son was wanting to keep riding.
He collected the bike on Wednesday & dropped it with myself on Thursday (to get the Dropper sorted) when I was wheeling the bike to the workshop I noticed the headset felt quite stiff & on closer inspection it also had a significant amount of play in it, I mentioned this & he asked if I could also take a look at it.
I popped it in the stand & pulled it apart, plenty of fresh Red grease under the top cover, but there doesn't appear to be a compression ring fitted 🤔
Dropped the fork to check the rest of it, lower bearing & steerer tube very dirty /rusty (the fork doesn't even look like its been out of the bike) & there seemed to be the remains of the plastic compression ring that was completely worn.
All that looks to have been done is some Red grease added under the top cover & all for the bargain price of £30 !
It hasn't helped that its an
Headset thats made of plastic.
The bike will be getting a complete new Headset fitted.
Be careful who you pay to 'fix' your bike, this bike was dangerous & not fit to ride.

Video showing top cover tight against the upper headset cup & a random piece of seal hanging out.
Pic 1 - No Compression Ring
Pic 2 - Upper headset cover covered in Red grease & the remains of the compression ring
Pic 3 - Old dirt / rust inside the headtube
Pic 4 - Old worn headset removed

Wigton Pump Track update

I swung by Taste Wigton this afternoon on my way home from riding to hopefully speak with someone from the Borderlands Project about the proposed Pump Track. I wasn't feeling over optimistic tbh, but to my surprise they had some info boards out with some pics of a Rider / Pump Track & a graphic of how the new Track may look in Throstle Park.
I spoke with Steven from Cumberland Council who was very positive about it & confirmed it is something that will go ahead & that they have a pretty healthy budget for the Throstle Park project on the whole so was reasonably confident a decent standard Pump Track would be built.
It's still a good while off (Summer 2028) but at least it sounds like its gonna happen.

The picture showing the Pump Track in Throstle Park is just a random Track drawing & not a design for the proposed Track.
👍👍

A quick post to let you know the current Workshop situation.
As with every April, we get a few nice days of weather, couple of Bank Holidays, the clocks go back & all at once everyone wants their bikes fixed !
In the past I've always tried to squeeze quick jobs in for folk, but these quick jobs always turn out to be much bigger than expected & next thing you've spent a few hours on it & the folk you've promised to get their bikes in have been pushed back, which isn't ideal.
As much as I don't like saying No to folk, I won't be squeezing any 'quick' jobs in, everyone will get added to my job list & I'll get to them when I can. With current jobs booked in, the next availability is early May. If everything I have booked in goes to plan, then hopefully sooner.

Best way to book your bike in is to give me a Call - 07917852515 (please don't call via WhatsApp / Messenger / Instagram or with a Phone made from Cups & String)
Also happy for you to Message me, just make sure that whatever way you message you get notifications as the amount of folk who don't read replies is ridiculous!
My Work phone tends to be switched off outside of working hours.
If you have your bike booked in or call me to say your bringing it round & then for whatever reason decide not to come, or if you managed to get it sorted elsewhere, please let me know.

Last few things ...
It would be appreciated if all bikes are brought in clean.
Ebikes need Batteries (charged) & keys with them.
Any bikes with Sram AXS (or similar) need Batteries attached.
No DIY Ebikes, Surrons or anything that's Chipped / derestricted.
Payment via Cash or Bank Transfer.
Although I work from Home, bikes need to be dropped off / collected during working hours.

Current opening hours are ..
Mon 8.30-6
Tue 9.30-6.30
Wed 8.30-6
Thur 9.30-6.30
Fri 8.30-5.30

I might have an odd early finish at times, as I also want to get out & ride !

Cheers folks

When something like a seized bolt can turn a simple job into a big job.
Main pivot bolt was seized onto the bearings & was unable to unscrew it (it was just splaying the swingarm apart) still wasn't budging after being soaked in Release Oil.
With it being Carbon its not really ideal to apply any heat, so the area was masked off with some foil tape (& old Sparco Heat Proof Gloves underneath) to concentrate the heat on the bolt, also drilled a 3mm up the centre to then spray Freeze Spray into it ... still not budging!
Last resort, get the drill out!
I drilled a small hole on the opposite site & tapped an old Torx bit in, then started drilling the bolt out, going up 1mm at a time untill the bolt head & some of the shaft came loose.
I could then wind the remainder of the bolt out, give everything a good clean up & fitted some new Bearings & Bolt (also replaced the other frame bearings)
Job sorted.

Workshop is pretty busy at the minute & waiting time is potentially 2 - 3 week?
I can only do so much each day.
Ill put up a Workshop Update post next week.

Unless you've been living under a rock this morning, you've probably noticed several new bikes being released, all with the new DJI Avinox motor, one of them being the new PX Carbon, which Brad from kindly loaned me the other night to take for a blast up High Pike.
I'm not gonna give you some in depth review or start my own YouTube channel (Like & Subscribe 🖕)
What i will say is that its a bloody nice bike to ride, Mullet from the factory, steeper seat tube, slacker head angle than the original Amflow & Schwalbe Gravity Pro Radial tyres (i think those tyres play a big part in how it felt)
£6500, Fox 36s & Float shock, Magura Gustav brakes, Sram S Series T Type, there's not really anything you'd need to change out of the box in my opinion.
I think they come up quite small, I rode a Large & it fit pretty well.
Avinox M2s motor, 1500w & 150nm !! These numbers are starting to take the p**s tbh, so much power its kinda pointless, without to much effort you can ride up most things on the 15.5mph limit, good fun though, but don't expect the battery to last long, 15 mile & 3000ft & I had 18% left.
Wind the power & torque down & it'll still be a cracking bike to ride & you'll get far more range from the battery.
If you're looking for a new bike, the Amflow is definitely worth a look, head down to & bother Brad

If you are looking to buy something new, try & take it out for a Demo Ride (what looks good on paper might not suit you when riding) & buy it from somewhere local.
Be interesting to see how Drivetrains, Rear hubs etc ... all fair with all this power & torque

Anyway, that's enough from me, don't forget to Like & Subscribe

Good day down at the .co.uk Demo Day, cracking weather, some good crack & some top guiding from
3 Ebikes, Amflow PL Pro, Yeti LTE & Whyte Kado RSX
First ride was the Amflow PL Pro with the DJI / Avinox motor, I'm sure everyone is well aware of the Avinox motor by now, this was my first proper ride on one. Personally I think the 1000w & 120nm is far too much for general trail riding, but the motor is very nice, nice & smooth & even when at the 15.5mph limit its very smooth off & back on yhe power, a cracking all round trail bike for the Lakes, as alot of folk have found out, its a little lacking on propper rough descents.
Second ride was the Yeti LTE with the Bosch Gen5 motor, never been a huge Yeti fan tbh, but it rode pretty well, more than enough power imo, not a bad weight at around 23kg & pretty well planted on yhe descents
Third was the Whyte KADO RSX, ive rode one before & quite liked it, same Bosch Gen5 motor as the Yeti, not the lightest of bikes but the geometry / fit of the bike (for me anyway) is spot on & you can manoeuvre it around pretty well, I think I prefer the Elyte Evo over it thought.
There seemed to be plenty of talk about new bikes coming out from various brands with the Avinox / DJI motor, also a new Update for the Bosch Gen5 motor & the possibility of something new from Shimano?
Potentially alot to choose from in the coming months if you're in the market for a new EBike

Not the most exciting post, but have noticed for a while that alot of Ebikes suffer from premature bearing wear in rear hubs & also that freehubs / axles get a lot of wear marks on them ... less than ideal!
The majority of these Ebikes also have rear Thru Axles that are tapered / thinner in the middle section, I'm no engineer, but to me, this doesn't help things as it allows the hub axle to flex under load which then means everything's out of alignment which then leads to premature wear.
This Levo Thru Axle is 12mm, but reduces down to around 11.27mm (how much weight is that even saving?). If you look at the 2nd picture you can see where it tapers down 13mm from the end of the thread.
Thru Axles from the likes of are a constant 12mm across its length which is gonna help support the hub axle, also have some rear Thru Axles to suit their Hubs that are machined in certain areas to save weight, but still have the support where needed.
I'm not saying fitting a new rear Thru Axle is gonna make your hub bearings last forever, but its certainly gonna help.

Whats others thoughts on this?

A long overdue Workshop post!
The busiest start to the year I've had, things have eased slightly this last couple of week but still plenty going on & with that big yellow thing appearing in the sky & hopefully the start of some better weather, folk will start getting bikes out again after winter & the workshop gets mega busy (usually around Easter time)
If you've any events or trips planned & you want your bike sorted, you'll be aswell to get it booked in well in advance.

Cheers folks 👍
