ScientifEQ

ScientifEQ Specialist equine parasitology services using the most sensitive faecal egg count technology. Each s We will report this to you by email.

How to use diagnostic tests?

•Diagnostic tests are used as part of routine monitoring of parasite burden, commonly between 2-4 times per year
•By using diagnostic tests to build up part of a picture of a horses parasite burden you can directly target animals that require treatment and determine those that do not.
•Screening new horses to build up a picture of their parasite burden
•Colic research

has linked prevalence with both tapeworm and cyathastomin burdens (Ulinger 1990; Proudman et al. 1998). How the service works

We require a FRESH dung sample from each horse that is to be tested. This will then be sent in the container provided with the accompanying submission form. We will conduct the desired faecal egg count providing you with an Eggs Per Gram (EPG) reading. With this information you can then decide the most suitable action for that particular horse or pony. In light of the recent changes announced by the Prime Minister, we would like to assure you that our services and laboratory will still be open and providing animal health services as usual. We will continue to provide the best service we can to our customers, whilst putting the correct measures in place to protect our team. We have put together some questions and answers which may help address any queries you may have.

1. Will treatments/ or faecal egg counts be sent out early or in bulk if I am on a programme?
No we will continue to send faecal egg counts/ Equisals and treatments as normal which is approximately a week before they are due. Should there be any changes to Royal Mail services, we will then review this, but please be assured we will do everything within our powers to ensure that horses/ ponies/ donkeys do not miss essential treatments.

2. Should I send back faecal egg count samples?
Yes, please continue to send back samples as normal, and if you are on a programme – as per your programme schedule.

3. Should I still send back Equisals?
Yes, Equisal have also announced this morning, they have provisions in place to comply with the necessary requirements, but will be testing as normal.

4. Will the test results take longer to come back?
At the present time, there is no reason for results to take longer than normal to be sent out once the samples have been received by the relevant lab.

5. Will the office still be open for enquiries?
Yes our equine advisors are at the end of the telephone and email should you have any queries. Should the situation change we will of course notify you of this.

If you have any queries, or concerns, please just email or call us on 01267 223322 and we will gladly assist you.

Very interesting piece on Tapeworm from Intelligent Worming 👍💩🐛

Did you know...
TAPEWORM FACTS 🐛
The most commonly used drug for the treatment of tapeworm infection in horses is praziquantel.
This is the active ingredient in many combination wormers. The only other drug licenced for treating tapeworm is a double dose of pyrantel.
Both these drugs have a very short half-life in the horse’s
system, meaning they aren’t present within the horse for very long –only around 24 hours 😮
After this time, the horse is just as likely to become reinfected by tapeworm as it was before a worming treatment.
For this reason it is especially important to ensure that the risk of reinfection is reduced as much as possible for the best chance to achieve and maintain
low burden status after worming.

🐴 Interested in how to reduce possible tapeworm reinfection? Catch our Facebook post at 1.30pm tomorrow.

At our yard we follow a strict worming 🐛 programme, due to worms becoming resistant to wormers it’s important to act conservatively with the pasture.

We follow advice from Penmellyn Equine Vets and are now due to worm count all the horses, using a company called ScientifEQ all samples are routinely tested twice, the results get emailed promptly. 👍

Fingers crossed 🤞🏻 we get zero eggs allround again like last time 😀
