Here’s a trio of 3 early antique English made violins all with one piece maple backs and beautiful in their own way!

2 are set up for baroque playing and still have their original necks.

One set and ready to go off to its new owner and 2 still for sale.

Working on the antique English cello again today and cleaning out some of the area’s before gluing and retouch. Not too long now in the picture of things until the front can be glued back on.

Cleaning out the old cracks does take a lot of time and patience.

I have clearly need a tea break as I think I can seethe outline of the top of Australia in one section I have soaked apart today !😳

Been quite busy with services and repairs /restoration/ rehairs these last weeks, and it has come up in conversation with people “what other accessories do we have? “

We have Bows, rosins, silky violin sleeping bags and some chinrests /shoulder rests.
In general we don’t sell string sets but if you book your instrument in for a service we can supply the specific strings set needed and fit them for you.

We make bespoke instruments to order and include aftercare for years and years to come with the purchase as we love what we do and always want our handmade instruments to look their best.

Work progressing on the antique cello.
Messy plaster cast making day!
We will leave the cast to dry for a bit before we adjust it, and then use warm sand and moisture to reduce the arching distortion to the front. Slowly getting there.

Part of the process for restoring old instruments can be dealing with historic repairs which have started to fail or can be markedly improved. ( for strength/aesthetics/playability and sound)

Working on this antique cello has been ongoing for sometime now. The new neck has been grafted, ready and waiting to be set into the body once the old cracks have been opened, cleaned, reglued and retouched. We will soon fit new English boxwood pegs that were made in keeping with the style of the era the cello was made.

We hope to have it ready to play again in April but there is much work to be done before then!

Opening, cleaning,gluing and retouching the old cracks that were starting to fail takes a long time. Once we have finished the work to the cracks on the front we will use a plaster cast mold of the front to use heat and sand to help remove the some areas of arching distortion that have happened over time.

Here are some photos of the new neck graft, bushes peg holes and newly fitted fingerboard. Also crack cleaning in progress to remove old retouch/ dirt and old glue/debris. The aim is not to make the cello look new but to hide and strengthen the front and visually hide the cracks which are very noticeable.
