📣OUT TODAY | PIXIES – BOSSANOVA & TROMPE LE MONDE

Two essential chapters in the Pixies story get the 2026 remaster treatment today. Bossanova arrived in 1990 with the band taking their sound somewhere stranger and more expansive with surf rock, space rock and those unmistakable Black Francis vocals sitting alongside Kim Deal, Joey Santiago and David Lovering at full flight.

Velouria, Dig For Fire, Allison, Ana and Havalina still sound like very few other records from the period. Then came Trompe Le Monde in 1991 which pushed the volume and aggression back up again with Planet of Sound, Alec Eiffel, Head On, U-Mass and Motorway to Roswell. Together they capture a band constantly pulling their own sound apart and putting it back together.

Both albums have been newly remastered by Kevin Vanbergen from the Pixies’ original analogue tapes as part of the band’s 40th anniversary catalogue campaign. It is a proper return to the source rather than simply another repress and the new masters are intended to reveal more of the detail buried within these recordings.

We have both new 4AD LPs in stock and they are out today in the UK. If Pixies, 4AD, alternative rock, indie, noise rock, surf rock or the extraordinary run of records surrounding Surfer Rosa and Doolittle are part of your record collection then these two belong in the conversation!

🥁OUT TODAY | FUNKADELIC – MAGGOT BRAIN🥁

Now here is an album that need little introduction… Originally released in 1971 and still sounding completely out there more than five decades later, Maggot Brain sits right at the meeting point of funk, psychedelic rock, soul and jazz.

Eddie Hazel’s extraordinary guitar on the title track is only part of it. From “Can You Get To That” and “Hit It And Quit It” through to “Super Stupid” and the sprawling “Wars Of Armageddon” this is Funkadelic at full power.

George Clinton, Eddie Hazel, Tiki Fulwood, Billy Nelson, Bernie Worrell and the rest of the P-Funk family made something here that went far beyond the boundaries of funk. Its influence runs through Parliament, Bootsy Collins, Sly & The Family Stone, Prince, hip hop, psychedelic rock and countless records that followed.

The new Westbound Records / Org Music reissue is out today and has been mastered directly from the original analogue tapes with the lacquers cut from that analogue source.

The Armageddon Red LP at 33⅓ RPM and the 2LP 45 RPM edition for those who want to hear this extraordinary record spread across four sides. A proper new pressing of Maggot Brain has been a long time coming and this one has been given the care the record deserves. Funkadelic fans, P-Funk heads, Eddie Hazel devotees, George Clinton fans and anyone drawn to the darker psychedelic side of funk should know about this one.

❤️A lovely moment in the shop this week✨

When we met author Alan Budge and heard about his book Imagine we really liked the idea behind it.

It asks that great impossible Beatles question.

What if John Lennon had lived?

Alan’s novel imagines that alternative history and the possibility of John eventually returning to the stage and The Beatles finding their way back together.

We thought it was such a positive idea that we were more than happy to have the book on the shelves and help people to discover a great read.

Then a couple visiting us from overseas spotted Imagine in the shop and decided to buy it. There were so excited that it was already signed by the author.

Tom decided to raise their excitement one step night and just happened to mention that Alan was actually in the shop at that very moment too paying us a visit over international Beatleweek!

Their faces lit up ☺️

So we introduced them and they had the chance to meet Alan and talk to him about the book before getting a photograph together.

It was a lovely little scene to witness.

Two people who had just discovered a book about an imagined Beatles future suddenly finding themselves standing in a Liverpool record shop talking to the man who had written it.

Tbh this really that’s what makes Liverpool and this place special. You never quite know who you’re going to meet on Matthew Street.

JOHN WILLIAMS – LEGACY | OUT TOMORROW 🎬🎻

We’ve got this one in the shop ready for tomorrow! It is difficult to think of many modern composers whose music has been such a huge part of so many people’s lives.

The sound of Morris Murphy‘s trumpet entry at the opening of Star Wars brings hairs to the neck of the most hardened chap!

The first few notes of Jurassic Park and you think you’re standing in front of those gates again 🔥

Hedwig’s Theme, Raiders March, The Imperial March, Schindler’s List, E.T.… these pieces have lived with generations of us.

What makes Legacy particularly interesting is that these aren’t simply old soundtrack recordings gathered together. This is John Williams conducting his own music, in some remarkably fine modern recordings made with the Vienna Philharmonic ( arguably the best orchestra in the world ) Berliner Philharmoniker and the Recording Arts Orchestra of Los Angeles, released on the Deutsche Grammophon classical label.

The recordings come from some of the most impressive Williams projects of recent years, including his Vienna and Berlin concerts and Across the Stars with violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. The album also has new notes from film music historian Jon Burlingame.
