In this experimental fluid art tutorial, coming up next Tuesday on my YouTube channel, I’m playing with a new little technique I’ve been developing called Flick • Blow • Pull.

Using our fingers to flick the paint, a straw to gently blow it across the canvas and a palette knife to pull and shape the movement, we can create beautiful feather-like tendrils and flowing shapes without having to paint every individual feather.

I’ll also show you how gentle tilting and adding more paint can change the movement and help bring the painting to life.

For this piece, I’m working with layers of teal, purple, pink, magenta and white, allowing the transparent colours to interact and create depth, movement and those lovely abstract feather effects. What a fun technique it’s turned out to be 🫟💖🐬 How do not flicking paint? 😁🫟

August Workshop Update! 🩵

I’ve been developing a new little fluid-art technique I’m calling Flick • Blow • Pull, and I think you’re going to love it.

You’ll also have the choice to keep your painting completely abstract or, if you fancy it, add a little beak and eye and turn all that movement into the suggestion of a bird. 🐦

We’ll be using our fingers to flick the paint, a straw to blow and create those lovely feather-like tendrils, and a palette knife to pull and shape the movement. We can tilt the canvas and add more paint as we go too.

I’ve been playing with this in kingfisher blues, turquoise, aqua, white and little flashes of copper, and it’s creating some beautiful movement. 🩵💙🧡

And one of you is going to be using the bronze, gold, chocolate and copper colours from the February workshop you sadly couldn’t make, so I’m really interested to see how this technique looks in those rich, warm colours!

I’ll be putting together a short video for you all to watch on Tuesday before the workshop, so you can see exactly what I mean by Flick • Blow • Pull and get a little feel for what we’ll be doing.

No need to practise or worry about getting it right. We’ll be experimenting and seeing where the paint takes us on the day. That’s the fun bit! ✨

I can’t wait to see what you all come up with! 🐥🫟💫

Have you ever looked at a toilet brush and thought… that belongs in an art studio!? 😄🚽🎨

In this video, I transform one of the most unexpected household items into a tool for creating beautiful fluid art. The results genuinely surprised me!

I’d love to know… what’s the most unusual object you’ve ever used to make art, or what everyday item should I experiment with next?
