Hot weather incoming — is your reef ready?

Well… that didn’t take long! 👀

A little while ago we showed you our new system well and truly in its ugly stage.

Now? It’s virtually disappeared.

So what did we do?

Honestly… not much.

We gave the tank time, added clean-up crew and let the developing ecosystem get on with it.

And the best bit? Look closely at the glass and see how many copepods are now running around! 🔎

That’s exactly what we want to see — a new system becoming a living ecosystem, rather than just a clean box of saltwater.

Sometimes patience really is the best reef-keeping tool. 🪸🐠

This little anemone shrimp seems to have found the perfect spot inside one of our Bubble Tip Anemones.

🟤 It’s official… our new system has reached the ugly stage!

And do you know what?

We’re genuinely pleased to see it.

The “ugly stage” is the point during a new tank’s cycle where diatoms, algae and other microorganisms start appearing on the rocks and glass. It might not look pretty, but it’s actually a sign that your aquarium is coming to life.

This stage tells us that the biological processes needed to support a healthy reef are developing. It’s all part of creating a stable ecosystem.

The biggest mistake? Trying to make it look perfect too soon.

Our plan now is simple:
🧪 Keep monitoring water parameters.
💧 Stay patient and avoid chasing numbers.
🐌 Add the first clean-up crew when the tank is ready.
🪸 Let nature do what it does best before introducing more livestock.

Almost every successful reef tank goes through this phase. The ones that come out the other side are usually the ones that weren’t rushed.
