Correct eye protection during a partial solar eclipse is essential because the Sun is never completely covered. Even a small visible portion of the Sun is bright enough to damage your retinas.
Here are the key reasons:
* Permanent eye damage can occur without pain. Looking directly at the Sun can cause solar retinopathy, where intense sunlight burns the retina. Because the retina has no pain receptors, you may not realize damage has occurred until hours later.
* Vision loss may be irreversible. Symptoms can include blurred vision, blind spots, distorted vision, or reduced color perception. In some cases, vision improves over time, but permanent damage is possible.
* The eclipse doesn’t make the Sun safe to view. During a partial eclipse, the overall surroundings become dimmer, which can cause your pupils to dilate. This may allow even more harmful sunlight to reach the retina if you look at the Sun directly.
Safe ways to watch a partial eclipse
* Wear certified eclipse glasses that comply with the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard. Inspect them before use—discard them if they are scratched, torn, or damaged.
* Use a handheld solar viewer that also meets the ISO 12312-2 standard.
* Watch indirectly using a pinhole projector or other projection method.
* If using binoculars, a camera, or a telescope, never look through them with eclipse glasses alone. These devices require special solar filters mounted securely over the front of the optics. Regular eclipse glasses are not sufficient when viewing through magnifying equipment.
What not to use
The following do not provide adequate protection:
* Regular sunglasses (even very dark ones)
* Smoked glass
* Exposed film or X-ray film
* CDs, DVDs, or compact discs
* Polarizing filters
* Homemade filters that are not specifically designed for solar viewing
The only time it is safe to look at the Sun without eye protection is during the brief period of totality in a total solar eclipse, when the Sun’s bright disk is completely covered by the Moon. This never occurs during a partial eclipse, so eye protection is required the entire time.
Using the proper protection lets you enjoy the eclipse safely while avoiding permanent damage to your eyesight.
