Reach Out to the Community supports people experiencing homelessness & poverty around South Machester

Life can change in an instant 🐝

Over the past few months, my family has experienced the unimaginable.
We lost my beautiful younger sister Kate, just weeks after being diagnosed with Stage 4 bowel cancer at 53.

Watching someone you love go from living a full life, teaching, laughing, making plans for the future, to being gone in such a short space of time changes your perspective forever.

It has made me reflect even more deeply on the work we do at Reach Out to the Community.

Every person we meet has a story.

No one grows up dreaming of becoming homeless.
No one plans to need a food bank.
No one expects to lose everything.

For some, it’s the breakdown of a relationship. For others, it’s losing a job, poor mental health, domestic abuse, addiction, bereavement, illness, rising living costs, or simply one unexpected event that sets off a chain reaction.

The truth is, many of us are only a few difficult life events away from needing help ourselves.

My sister’s illness reminded me how quickly life can change.
One phone call changed our family’s world forever.
It reinforced something I’ve believed since founding Reach Out to the Community in 2016, compassion should never come with conditions.

When someone reaches out for help, they don’t need judgement. They need kindness.
They need dignity.
They need someone to believe in them until they can believe in themselves again.

Behind every person sleeping rough, every family relying on a food parcel & every individual struggling to cope is a human being with hopes, dreams, loved ones & a story that deserves to be heard.

Kate believed in that too.
She was incredibly proud of our charity & despite unknowingly living with cancer, she completed the Manchester Marathon 2 years ago to raise funds so we could continue supporting people facing homelessness & poverty.

The greatest lesson she leaves behind is that kindness matters.

So today, I simply ask this: before judging someone for where they are in life, remember that you probably don’t know what they’ve been through.

A little compassion can change someone’s day.

A little support can change someone’s future.

And sometimes, it can even save a life 💚

FRIDAY 23rd JULY:

Stephanie & James from our Outreach Team began their shift at midnight, carrying out welfare checks at Manchester Airport for anyone sleeping rough.

Following this, they continued outreach across Wythenshawe, Northenden, Didsbury, Withington, Fallowfield and Chorlton, offering support and ensuring those sleeping rough were aware of the services available to them.

THURSDAY 23rd JULY:

This morning Stephanie was joined by Joanna Midgley for outreach, beginning at 5:45am in Chorlton before travelling across Manchester to Manchester Airport, Wythenshawe, Didsbury, Withington & Hulme.

Throughout the morning, they carried out welfare checks on people experiencing street homelessness, offering support, assessing immediate needs, & checking they were connected with the appropriate services where required.

FRIDAY 17th JULY:

James and Vicky started outreach at 6.30am this morning covering Manchester Airport, Chorlton, Didsbury and Withington doing welfare checks and referrals where required.

IN MEMORY OF KATE MOORE 🐝

On 28th April 2026, I received a phone call that devastated our entire family. My younger sister, Kate Moore, had been diagnosed with Stage 4 bowel cancer that had already spread to her liver.

Kate had been feeling unwell since October the previous year. She visited her GP several times with what she believed were symptoms of IBS and stress.

When I received the call, I was coincidentally at The Deep in Hull. Kate had moved to the East Riding over 20 years ago after accepting a job as an Art Teacher at Hessle High School, where she had dedicated the last 25 years of her life to inspiring young people.
She absolutely loved her job.

Kate was told to go straight to hospital for surgery. However, when we arrived at Hull Royal Infirmary, we were given the heartbreaking news that it was too late for surgery. The following day she was transferred to Castle Hill Hospital. Three days later, a stent was inserted into her colon and, after nearly two weeks in hospital, we were finally able to take her home. She had very little energy and was incredibly weak.

At her next appointment, we were told that the cancer was extremely aggressive. She would need chemotherapy and targeted therapy every two weeks. We were told that, with treatment, she might have 30 months to three years to live, or just 10 to 12 months without treatment. Although still in complete shock, Kate remained positive and immediately started talking about plans to create as many special memories as possible with her two boys, aged 20 and 22, and with the rest of her family.

At her following appointment, Our older Sister Suzanne again raised concerns about how quickly her health was deteriorating.
The medical team said they wanted to begin chemotherapy immediately, but she had another 3 weeks wait.

On the Wednesday, Kate attended hospital to have a PICC line fitted ahead of starting chemotherapy the following Monday. I mentioned that her eyes had developed a yellow tint, so further blood tests were taken. Later that day, Kate received a call asking her to return to hospital.

I took her back at 3pm. She wasn’t seen by a doctor until 10pm, when we were told she needed a scan to determine whether a stent could be placed in her bile duct.
The following morning, the consultant explained that while the scan might show a blockage that could be treated, it could also reveal that her liver was failing. When we asked how long she had left if that was the case, we were told it would only be weeks.

The next day, our worst fears were confirmed. Kate’s liver was failing.

Just eight days later, my beautiful sister passed away.

I spent every night by her side in hospital, and throughout those final eight days she was never alone.
Family and friends made sure someone was always with her, surrounding her with the love.

We will never truly understand how Kate could be taken from us just seven weeks after her diagnosis, especially when we were told the cancer had likely been growing for more than ten years.

Kate’s funeral will take place on Monday 20th July 2026 at:

Kate requested flowers from her boys only.
Instead of floral tributes, she asked that donations be made to Reach Out to the Community.

Kate was incredibly proud of the charity I founded in 2016. In fact, two years ago, while unknowingly living with cancer, she took on the challenge of running the Manchester Marathon to raise money for the charity, a testament to her strength & kindness.

Any donation, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated and will help us continue supporting people experiencing homelessness and poverty.

OUTREACH UPDATE – TUESDAY 23rd JUNE, WEDNESDAY 24th JUNE & FRIDAY 26th JUNE

Tuesday 23rd June
James carried out outreach across South Manchester this morning alongside our outreach volunteer, Vicky, providing welfare checks, support and engaging with people sleeping rough.

Wednesday 24th June
James was joined on outreach by a representative from Change Grow Live Manchester (CGL Drug & Alcohol Services). We carry out weekly homeless outreach with CGL across South Manchester, working together to support people experiencing homelessness and help them access the services they need.

Friday 26th June
Stephanie, James & Vicky began outreach at 6.00am in Chorlton before heading to Manchester Airport, then covering Wythenshawe, Northenden, Didsbury & Withington. Throughout the morning, the team carried out welfare checks, offered support & made referrals where needed.

With the temperatures being so high this week, we also purchased more supplies of bottled water to help people we met stay hydrated & safe during the hot weather.
