This isn’t an Usborne book but it’s one I discovered this week and I love it! My eldest is 7 and she’s really interested in all the different people in it.

I really loved being able to read to her about Florence Nightingale alongside Mary Seacole. With my English teacher hat on I reckon John Agard would be proud.

Let’s talk David Walliams. I’ve controversially never been a fan of his chapter books. His picture books for younger readers are light hearted. The chapter books often rely on humiliation and stereotypes for humour. (Think Brian Wong, Miss Midge and the gender stereotypes in Billionaire Boy)

But…I also appreciate his books have got children reading. We can do better, so much better. Here is one to get you started. Cruise Ship Kid is about 10 year old Silver who lives on a cruise ship solving crimes. The format is accessible and the characters are engaging, funny and not harmful!
