From a little reference image to a tiny original painting 🌸🐝

Another glimpse into the making of a traditional miniature for a Book of Remembrance.

A small wildflower posy with anemones, poppies, delicate foliage — and a tiny bee hovering above. 🐝🌿

I love this part of miniature painting: taking a reference image and translating it into something completely hand-painted, with hundreds of tiny brushstrokes and layers of colour.

At this scale, every petal, leaf and little mark matters. What looks like a tiny detail from a distance becomes a whole little world when you look closely. ✨

Small painting. Big amount of work. And lots of love in every brushstroke.

A Kingfisher — a jewel of Britain’s rivers 💙🩵✨

A traditional miniature painting created for a Book of Remembrance, celebrating British wild nature and one of its most magical little birds.

I hope this tough summer hasn’t been too harsh for them. Kingfishers are truly the jewels of Britain’s rivers — flashes of electric blue and turquoise moving through the landscape.

This tiny painting is made with countless delicate brushstrokes and layers of colour, capturing the fluffy feathers, brilliant plumage and incredible energy of the bird.

There is something I love about working on such a small scale — so much life and energy contained in such a tiny image. 🪶💙
