So we have 3 event coming up on us , some of them coming us fast, but very exciting!

Join us on the 23rd October with A J West of a historical crime novel, based on an extraordinary true story. The Deadly Inheritance of Everest Macdonald is a dark, atmospheric historical mystery and a compelling adventure, as an unlikely investigator risks everything to pursue one of the most notorious killings of the Victorian stage.

Meet Levi Pinfold on the 11th October, who has created the newly illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Hear about how he approached the artwork, reimagining familiar characters with inspiration from his own personal world. The stunning result is the perfect keepsake and gift for all Harry fans. Attendees will receive a special pin badge and have the chance to buy books which Levi will happily sign. When buying a book you can take the price of the ticket off the book (one ticket off one book.)

An last not least, an author event with a difference! What if, instead of hearing an author talk about writing a mystery, you could solve one yourself? Join cosy crime author Jo Middleton for an interactive mini mystery, written especially for bookshops, featuring the characters from her latest novel, Bah Bloody Humbug. Search for clues, examine the evidence and see if you can uncover the culprit before the final reveal. There will be time to interrogate Jo too!

We nominated M for the young community shining star award for her hard work supporting the JHF. As well as helping out and making cakes for various fundraisers, M also designed and helped create our book nook.
Those of you who've been following the JHF for a while might remember M from our Big Give campaign and will know that she has made amazing progress in her life in all sorts of ways in the three years we've known her.
Congratulations M, we're so proud of you 💙💙

Great to see our bookclub going from strength to strength. They are lovely group. :)

This one really divided the group! While The Birdcage wasn’t quite a five-star read for everyone, a couple of our members absolutely loved it and gave it the full ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.

One thing we all loved was the setting around the 1999 solar eclipse. By complete coincidence, we were reading it during the month of the 2026 eclipse, which made the atmosphere of the novel feel even more special! 🌒✨

We also had very different experiences with the three sisters and the multiple perspectives. Lauren’s storyline was a particular favourite and some of us loved gradually piecing together what had happened through each sister’s perspective. Others found moving between the different viewpoints a little harder to follow.

The cliffhanger chapter endings were equally divisive! For some, they created suspense and made it difficult to put the book down but for others, the constant teasing of what had happened became a little frustrating. A few of us also managed to predict one of the reveals fairly early on, while another left us thinking, ‘Wait… is that it?!’ We apparently wanted something considerably more sinister, which perhaps says more about our book club than it does the book 😂🔪 No spoilers here!

Overall, we found The Birdcage an easy and atmospheric read with an intriguing family mystery at its heart. It may not have been a universal favourite, but it certainly gave us plenty to talk about and with opinions ranging all the way up to five stars, this was definitely a book that landed differently with each reader.

Have you read The Birdcage? Were you surprised by the ending, or did you work it out? 👀

We get a boat full of this coming in. Please pre order with us to make sure you are disappointed. There are very strict embargo’s on this so I can’t show or open the boxes when they come in. Can only on the day of release.
