Let’s talk about…

Deciduous Azaleas - which are looking incredible right now!

They’re resilient shrubs that bloom from spring through summer and are part of the Rhododendron genus.

Unlike their evergreen counterparts, they shed their leaves in autumn, unveiling a stunning array of red, orange, and yellow hues before falling.

They’re loved by many not only for their strong fragrances, their ability to withstand frost, but also for their vivid blossoms in shades of yellow, orange, and pink.

Add them the woodland schemes or shady borders, where there is moist but well-draining soil. They prefer acidic soil with a PH between 4.5-6 and thrive in partial shade to full sun. Pick up some ericaceous compost to enhance soil acidity if needed. We have a few varieties in at the moment. Ask our staff if you need help on where and how to plant them.

This Bank Holiday…

It’s the perfect weather to get into the garden!

Pop in and grab what you might need. From compost, bark and topsoil, to tools, ties, watering cans, pots, rockery stones, gardening gadgets, books and much more.

We of course have a huge variety of plants too…

Maybe you want to fill a shady corner, perhaps you want to add some bold bright colours to a super sunny spot? Maybe you want to keep it clean and classic with a white garden flower bed, or want to create a rockery with some alpines.

We have everything you need for any space or container, big or small, and if you need advice, our staff are more than happy to help.

We’ve also just had a huge houseplant drop, so you can bring nature indoors too.

If you are still looking for plans to make a day of it, why not join us for lunch at The Reading Room, or there’s still a couple of spots on the cushion-making workshop on Saturday too! (see www.holdenclough.com/events)

Happy Bank Holiday weekend!

It's World Bee Day…

Bees are absolutely vital to our planet and today, we celebrate them worldwide.
Their very important job of pollinating helps maintain healthy ecosystems, supports biodiversity, and ensures the production of fruits, vegetables, and nuts.
Without bees, many plant species would dramatically decline or even disappear, leading to disturbed food chains and weakened natural habitats, highlighting their crucial role in sustaining all life on our planet.

Start by planting pollinating plants in gardens, containers, window boxes, hanging baskets, allotments and more.

Pollinating plants are crucial for bees because they directly supply the pollen, nectar and nourishment that they need for their survival, reproductive success, colony health, as well as supporting the eco and agricultural systems.

Choosing different plants that bloom at different times, also provide bees with a continuous food source throughout the year.

Good pollinator choices are…

Astrantia – Blooms mid to late summer
Lavender - Blooms from late spring to summer.
Origanum – Blooms mid to late summer
Nepeta – Blooms late spring to early autumn
Foxglove - Blooms from late spring to early summer.
Sedum – Blooms late summer to Autumn, providing late-season nectar.
Echinacea - Blooms from summer to autumn
Monarda – Bloom mid to late summer
Eryngium big blue - Blooms from mid to late summer
Calamintha - Blooms from mid-summer through to early autumn
So, plant a pollinating plant to celebrate our bees, today on World Bee Day, and beyond!

Won't you just look at all the colours as everything continues to bud and bloom at The Nursery. It really is a special time of year…

This week, Kelly from our team and the lovely Victoria from Hark Therapies hit the road in our van to drop little plant surprises on the doorsteps of as many local homes as they could.

A small gift from us, to make people smile, and in the hope that we can inspire people to get gardening!

We hope those we managed to get to enjoy them now, and for years to come, as they're perennials and will pop up again next year, and beyond.

We chose Allium Purple Rain as they’re one of our favourite plants, as you’ll see in the beds as you enter The Nursery.

Almost statuesque, they can look regal yet also like playful purple pom poms, and they’re magnets for bees and other pollinators. They can add character and colour to sunny beds, borders, and containers alike. They have a long blooming period, and when they’re finished flowering, their seed heads can be left for structural interest, or cut and used in floral displays, too.

Because we (unfortunately!) can’t reach you all, or give away all our stock, we’ve popped offers on the rest of them here on-site.

There’s 5 for £15 on 1 litre pots and 3 for £10 on 2 litre pots. Starting tomorrow, while stocks last.

Do you have an allotment that needs stocking?

Perhaps you want to try and grow your own fruit and veg at home in a planter or container. Maybe you’ve dug a bed dedicated to growing your own food?

We currently have a good range of veg strips, fruit trees and plants, ready to be planted now.

From strawberries and rhubarb, tomatoes, peppers and chillis to herbs and salad leaves…we think you can’t beat the taste of something you’ve grown and nurtured with your own hands…
