Blue Mitchell - The Thing To Do

Trumpeter Blue Mitchell’s soulful, swinging style embodied the Blue Note ethos and his 1964 debut for the label The Thing To Do showcased his sound across a diverse set of tunes from hard bop to ballads to Calypso with an exceptional quintet featuring Junior Cook on tenor saxophone, Chick Corea on piano, Gene Taylor on bass, and Al Foster on drums.

Stanley Turrentine - Easy Walker

Stanley Turrentine’s 1966 album Easy Walker was right in the soulful tenor saxophonist’s sweet spot with Mr. T fronting a versatile quartet with McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Mickey Roker on drums. The engaging set featured hard-grooving numbers, sultry ballads, and a version of Burt Bacharach’s “What The World Needs Now Is Love.”

Neil Ardley, Ian Carr, Don Rendell - Greek Variations & Other Aegean Exercises (British Jazz Explosion Series)

Originally released in 1970, and now much sought after by collectors and connoisseurs, original copies sell for upwards of £600.

Considered one of Neil Ardley’s best compositions, ‘Greek Variations & Other Aegean Exercises’ ranks as not only one of the finest expressions of British progressive modern jazz but also one of the very best recordings to emerge from Denis Preston’s celebrated Lansdowne Studios, home to some of the most highly-regarded British modern jazz of the era. It’s also an important junction point in the careers of the Ardley, Carr and Rendell, showing three distinct pathways that British jazz would follow in the subsequent years: Ardley’s orchestrated and expanded explorations; Carr’s jazz rock, and Rendell’s more orthodox acoustic approach

Decca is reissuing two albums by Mike Taylor on vinyl in 2025 for the first time since their original release. The recordings have been remastered from the original analog tape and pressed on 180g vinyl, as well as featuring a detailed accompanying booklet in which British jazz expert Tony Higgins discusses the music and the artist’s life.

These reissues were remastered at Gearbox Studios in London using the original tapes (or high-resolution digital source files taken from the original tapes), which were transferred to a Studer tape machine and then mastered using an analog mastering console.

Long sought after by collectors and connoisseurs, original copies now sell for eye-watering sums.

Joining pianist John Cameron in the “good and the great of British Jazz” line-up is bass player Danny Thompson, percussionist Tony Carr, and flute and saxophone player Harold McNair.

This new edition was mastered at Abbey Road using high definition 24bit/192kHz audio files, copied directly from the original stereo analogue master tapes. Images of those tapes are included in the package alongside new sleeve notes written by noted author, compiler and documentary maker Tony Higgins, who interviewed John Cameron especially for this release.

‘Off Centre’ was originally released on Decca’s ‘alternative’ Deram imprint, a home for Psychedelia, Folk, and Prog Rock sounds, that still found time for chart hits by Cat Stevens, The Move, and The Moody Blues. The variety displayed on the seven original tracks on ‘Off Centre’ sits comfortably with Deram’s eclectic style, ranging from passages of improvisational ‘Free Jazz’ on the title track, to the danceable ‘Mod Jazz’ grooves of album closer ‘Troublemaker’.
