Earlier this week Jessica had the pleasure of visiting Yarra Farm in Colchester which is just a 10 minute trip from our office.

She was invited by Rob Mann from Greenpath Ventures a charitable organisation who are developing a community farm and garden at the Yarra Farm site in line with the vision of the landowner, the late Brian Middleton. The aim is to help people improve wellbeing through connecting with nature and the community.

The site was teaming with activity and community members including pre school children enjoying the outdoors, students from the Kingswode Hoe School enthusiastically helping to clear planting spaces and members of The Rotary Club of Colchester, Camulos and Forum groups preparing a Remembrance Garden.

Jessica took along some seed for the community produce garden and chatted with Rob from Greenpath and Peter Herring from Rotary Colchester Camulos about the plans for the Remembrance Garden and how Moles Seeds could help.

It was great to see this fantastic community endeavour taking shape.

Are you looking to create an urban meadow?

The urban meadow is a great option in areas that do not require the formality of bedding schemes. It is a cost effective alternative to grass with a large cost saving on mowing. It has proved immensely popular with the public for its rejuvenating effect in urban areas and its positive effect on biodiversity. Our range of non-native, direct sown, annual and perennial mixtures make a stunning display throughout the spring and summer months. The contents of the mixtures have a wide range of flowering times which overlap from late spring to late summer.

Take a look at our range on the website and please contact us should you require larger quantities.

Who's Who at Moles Seeds. This is Jason our sales representative who covers the East of England.

Jason spends the majority of his time visiting customers to discuss their seed requirements, providing variety suggestions, advice and quotations. Jason gets to know and understand the growing set ups of his regular customers allowing him to suggest the varieties that may be most suitable. Getting to know customers is something he greatly enjoys.

As well as visiting established customers Jason will visit new and potential customers to see how Moles Seeds might be able to help them.

Jason keeps on top of what is new in the seed industry by visiting trials alongside colleagues from the office and he ensures that the office are made aware of any issues that have arisen for growers.

If you would like Jason to pop in and visit your nursery he can be contacted by e-mail, [email protected] or telephone on 07842 437159.

Didiscus makes a great cut flower and we have listed Didiscus Blue Lace (DID05) for several years. We have now added Pink Lace (DID03) and White Lace (DID04) along with the mixture Heavenly Umbels Lace Mixed (DID06).

The Lace series produces large sweetly scented umbels and works well in borders as well as being an excellent cut flower with a good vase life. These annual plants reach approximately 60cm in height and are well worth growing.

It is always great to receive photos and hear how our customers and those we help out are getting on with our seeds. This image has been sent to us by Barnet Mencap who are growing Sunflower Junior for their fundraising and awareness campaign centred around sunflowers 🌻, a symbol often associated with hidden (non-visible) disabilities. They are growing and selling sunflowers within the community, inviting people not just to buy a plant, but to support a cause and stand in solidarity with people whose disabilities are not always seen or understood.

We wish them much enjoyment growing the Sunflowers and every success with raising awareness and funds.

New to our range this year is the popular Larkspur Misty Lavender.

This annual Delphinium produces beautiful spires of closely set double lavender/slate grey papery flowers. It is an excellent addition to floral arrangements as well as garden borders.

Larkspurs often perform best when direct sown into the flowering position in Spring or Autumn and germination can take a few weeks but they can also be module raised and transplanted.

Who's who at Moles Seeds. Today we would like to introduce you to Felipe. Felipe works in our warehouse and can be seen here weighing seed to be pre-packed. Packing seed by hand or machine is a crucial role undertaken by all the staff in the warehouse.

Felipe also ensures that the bulk warehouse stock is kept in order, moving the pallets of stock around with the forklift and organising the racking where items that are sold in larger units such as grass, peas, beans and sweetcorn are stored.

This last week has seen Felipe weighing out and allocating the onion sets in line with the pre-booked orders we have received. This is one of the many jobs he will undertake to help keep the warehouse operating smoothly.

We have added the Petunia Dot Star series to our range.

Dot star is a unique seed raised variety that has been bred over many years. It is genetically different to cutting raised varieties of a similar appearance and without the financial drawbacks associated with cutting material.

The plants are well branched with vibrant flower colours overlaid with white dots and spots giving a fun splattered effect great for impulse sales. Dot Star has a high level of weather resistance quickly regaining it's eye catching appearance after heavy rain. The plants grow to approximately 30cm in height. The colours in the range are Dark Violet, Deep Pink, Lilac, Red and Rose.
