The book shop needed to raise £30,000 for repairs

Charity shop volunteers who started a fundraiser in a bid to keep it open have surpassed their target and say they are now positive about its future.

Books Revisited, in Coleshill, Warks, was set to close down on Saturday as the 200-year-old shop needs repairing.

The goal was to raise £30,000 to fix the wooden framework and windows of the grade II-listed building.

Volunteer Barry Reeves thanked the community and said people had been "absolutely fantastic".

The book store is run by the Mary Ann Evans Hospice, which previously said the store was no longer financially viable in its current location.

Mr Reeves said coverage of the shop's plight had raised its profile and donations had come in from as far away as the US and Canada.

Schools and businesses in Coleshill also did their own fundraising.

The charity book shop opened in 2012 with Mr Reeves being one of the first volunteers.

"I love books, it was a dream," Mr Reeves said, adding his favourite book is Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird.

Pay for upkeep
"My favourite thing to do is talking to people when they come in and seeing children interested in books."

The hospice provides free services to those living with life-limiting illnesses and their families, caring for people in their own homes within northern Warwickshire.

Mr Reeves said now the fundraising target had been met, talks about the future of the shop would start and added he was feeling positive.

"We are currently in negotiations with the landlord to re-negotiate a lease on the property," a spokesperson for Mary Ann Evans Hospice said.

Due to the letting being a commercial lease rather than a domestic one, it is the hospice's responsibility to pay for most of the upkeep of the building, including windows and doors.

The hospice said: "We as a charity are over the moon and blown away by the volunteers for setting this up."

**WE'VE BLOOMIN DONE IT!!**

We've only gone and reached our target, and then some 🥰

What an amazing community we live in. It just goes to show, if you want something badly you will fight to keep it. To raise over £30,000 in just under 5 weeks is absolutely incredible.

To everyone that has fundraised, donated, given kind words, shared posts, nagged... we Thank-you.

Not gonna lie when we started this 5 weeks ago, it was just a daydream that we would hit the target BUT we just over a week to go we are there.

It's been an emotional rollercoaster, just reading people's comments and talking to people out and about; it's clear that the shop is well loved.

The crowdfunder will remain open till 31.3, so if you still want to donate, feel free. But for the moment us volunteers and Kim can breathe a sign of relief knowing we made it. 💝

Watch out for an update next week, once Kim has had a meeting with the Hospice.

*UPDATE*
We currently have £23,620 on our crowdfunding page with at least another £500 to go on tomorrow !

Massive thanks to everyone who baked cakes and came out to support us on Saturday with our cake sale, tombola and raffle. We made an amazing £950 (which has gone onto CF page).

We have 11 days left. We still have a few more collections to make from businesses who have been collecting for us and look out for Cafe On The Hill who are doing a silent auction for us.

Raffle tickets can still be purchased till tomorrow lunch time either by the shop or transfer to the CF page, just send me a message. Raffle will be drawn tomorrow afternoon.

It's been an emotional rollercoaster and we can see the end in sight. If you can spare a little nows the time to do it!

🥰

Because of their historical connections with Coleshill, and the High Street in particular, I've contacted TYPHOO TEA and UNILEVER (BRYLCREEM) to see if they would be willing to help. No response so far. Fingers crossed

We are having a tombola, cake sale and raffle on Saturday 18th March, raising money for our Save our Bookshop cause.

Unfortunately that means we're on the prowl again! If anyone would like to bake a cake for us, we welcome them all (I mean it's 🎂🍰!😋).

If any shops, pubs, restaurants etc would like to donate a prize for our raffle that would be amazing too. We are aware that a lot of you gave us something for the quiz a couple of weeks ago but if you'd like to do it again that'd be amazing.

Sale of raffle tickets will be on sale on Saturday on our stall (on High street) and then at The Bell on the evening. Winners will be drawn and contacted on Monday.

Our resident Town Crier, Tony Battle will be with us as well, town criering (sure that's not a word but 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️).

Message me (deb or one of our other volunteers) if you can help. Forever grateful 🙏

Even if it's a couple of quid it'll all help! With everything that we've received so far, we are up to about £17,000. Eek!

Just an update on our Save the Book Shop campaign.

We are currently at £13,535 with another £2,375 in cash donations. So we are over half way!

Thanks to everyone that's been fundraising for us as well.

We have 3 weeks left. If we don't reach our target by then, the shop will sadly close.

Please share, give a little or give a lot. Your support means everything ❤️
