BOOTS UPDATE
Some clarity is finally emerging about a new pharmacy in Corsham town centre. It turns out that the NHS licencing rules have some unintended – and unexpected – consequences. More details to come when we have them, but we can now say that there WILL be another pharmacy in the town centre, likely in the old Boots unit. However we can’t say WHEN that will be other than within a year. Obviously we would rather it was next week (!) but bizarrely we have no say in the matter. We are holding an empty premises in the meantime to ensure that, when the time finally comes, there is a space. As soon as we know more, we’ll post it here.

New pharmacy in Corsham... after a huge effort by many, the appeal to NHS to allow another pharmacy to open in place of Boots was successful. Most bizarrely, the applicant CarePlus Pharmacy https://carepluspharmacy.co.uk/ has never contacted Martingate, and indeed has refused to return our many calls and emails over many months. It is very very odd. The NHS has now set a deadline of 30 October for CarePlus to settle on an exact address in the "Main commercial area within Corsham". Presumably that means committing to a space. Obviously we would be happy to host them, but frankly anywhere in Corsham centre would be good!

The point of this post is to say that (a) the delay for a new pharmacy is not due to us not trying and (b) if any one feels the urge to let CarePlus know directly that they are very welcome in Corsham, then I am sure that wouldn't hurt! At this point, the whole application and appeal process could turn out to have been a waste of time :-(

Boots ALARM
I am extremely angry at Boots for leaving their alarm running for so long. I know everyone locally feels the same. We are only allowed one contact at Boots and they promised a response on Wednesday. Please know that I have hounded him since.
In the absence of any action from Boots we are now calling a locksmith to enter the building in the hope of silencing the alarm ourselves. I do not have keys, otherwise would have intervened a long time ago.
I can only apologise for the situation which is incredibly exasperating. One way or another it will be sorted today.
Feel free to message Boots in whatever way you see fit!

13 High Street update - we will regularly post updates here on the refurbishment of this important building.

Having received Planning Permission and Listed Building Consent, we have been working on the Pre-Commencement Conditions required before we can get on site and are planning to set up on site in the next week or two. Overall, the work will take up to a year, but the external work should be finished after about 5 months (hoping for before Christmas Lights, but it will be close). The first step is to remove the gas meter, and the gas supply, as we are stopping the use of fossil fuels in the building. After that, we are able to get the scaffolding up. More to follow as we progress!

PERMISSION GRANTED!
In November 2022, we applied for consent to convert the old Lloyds Bank into a boutique hotel and brasserie. We did not think it would take this long, but yesterday we received the letter we have been waiting for: PERMISSION GRANTED!

We are now re-engaging with our contractor to make specific plans, and we'll post more information here when we have it. Probably in a few weeks.

The delay imposed on us - and indeed, Corsham - was completely unexpected. But we can now move on.

Tree maintenance works will be carried out in town centre starting next week. They will run for a week or so. This includes the removal of the silver maple between the Coop and Cafe Grounded which has sadly split and is dangerous. We will be planting two young trees in the same location.

Please accept our apologies for any disruption, but know that these works are essential for long term tree health as well as public safety.

We were surprised to read today that Bitcoin miners use more power than the whole of Finland. Ethereum have shown that it doesn't have to be that way.

In September ethereum, the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency, underwent a radical transformation. A long-awaited upgrade, known as “the merge”, brought an e

So sad to hear the news of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. We have learned so much from her steadfast devotion to duty and decency which, for this individual at least, will be her abiding legacy. RIP.

Wondering what is happening with the old Lloyds Bank building at 13 High Street, ? It looks as though nothing is being done, but the opposite is true!

We will be converting the building into a boutique hotel, with a welcoming bar and brasserie on the ground floor. We may change its name, but the working title is CORSHAM HOUSE.

Given the climate emergency we are clearly facing, we are working hard to ensure that this listed building is fit for the future. This includes banning the use of fossil fuels, using heat pumps only. We are investigating whether we can run the hotel for at least part of the year off solar power alone. This is innovative work, and takes time, but it is important we get it right.

Be assured that we are a local business, totally committed to Corsham. We take our responsibility to this building, and to our town centre, very seriously. Please follow Martingate for the latest. We will post more information on this feed as soon as we have it. AH
