End of season prep for our Sassy Bee Apiary. We are currently making sure that the bees have enough stores to get through the colder months and we are feeding them bee syrup to help them build the stores up. The Nesta hive is struggling at the moment so we are giving them every chance to get through the winter.

To explain a little bit more about Varoa Mites, they are a parasite that can wipe out whole colonies of bees if left untreated. Treatment is obviously done after the honey has been harvested at around this time of the year and then again during the winter months. Varoa will steal vital nutrients from bees by piercing them and injecting pathogens into bees that cause wing deformities and compromise immunity resulting in a shorter lifespan. This will then have a impact on the colonies ability to replace the dying worker bees.
If anyone is interested in becoming a beekeeper I can not stress enough how important it is to attend a beekeeping course, because going into beekeeping with little to no knowledge will put your bees at risk of disease.

Please enjoy the double act that is me and Paul checking one of our hives. We reversed roles for this hive, so Paul is filming and I am inspecting.
This is our first full season beekeeping independently. Last season was spent training with the Beekeepers association and I am so glad that we took the time to learn as much as we could because beekeeping is not as easy as you would think. This hive (Nesta) has been quite challenging for us. We removed the old queen and some of the brood from the Cersei hive and they became the Nesta hive, the reason we removed the queen was because the bees in the Cersei hive were producing queen cells ready for a new queen. We were never sure how old the old queen was so with removing her and starting a new colony was always a risk, however she did lay a good amount of brood before she disappeared (we think she probably died). The hive then produced a queen cell to replace the old queen and we believe she is currently on her virgin flight, this can take up to 3 weeks for the queen to mate with as many drones as she can to enable her to produce brood for up to 3 seasons.
This season has definitely been an experience and a learning curve for me and Paul and we are still learning, however we are both enjoying our own little Sassy Bee Apiary. 🐝

We don't have just one queen cell, we have 3! These look like they are probably superceded cells which basically mean that our current queen is failing and needs replacing. We have no idea how old our current Cersei queen is as we rescued the hive last season. The other reason for bees producing queen cells is because they are getting ready to swarm. We don't want this to happen so we have done our very first split where we put the existing queen into a NUC (smaller hive) with some of her bees . We have no idea if this will be successful but fingers crossed that the Cersei hive gets a new queen and we will also get a second hive up and running with whatever happens in the Nuc.
Fingers crossed 🤞 and wish us luck!
