It’s been a busy couple of days displaying our new arrivals this week. There are lots of colourful autumn bedding plants and shrubs ready to plant straight away to brighten up your garden.

Now that September is well under way, things are starting to feel a little more autumnal 🍂

Here are some jobs to be getting on with in the garden for this month:

🍅 Harvest remaining summer crops and store as necessary.
🎃 Clear large leaves away from pumpkins and winter squash to allow them to ripen, and raise off the damp soil to avoid rotting.
🧅 Sow winter vegetable seeds and sets.
🌼 Start planting spring bulbs now for bright, early colour next year.
🌱 Give some TLC to lawns that have struggled during the hot summer. Scarify, aerate and feed lawns while the soil is still warm.
🪴 Prepare pots/flower beds for autumn bedding. Plant fresh shrubs now so that they can establish new roots before winter.

Autumn onion sets are a great way to get a head start over the winter, as they can establish strong roots while the soil is still warm. The cooler weather also reduces active pests.

Sets are already partially established, so you’ve skipped the delicate seedling stage, meaning a higher success rate and no thinning required.

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and we invite you to wear a gold ribbon to show your support.

You can purchase a ribbon at our till, and all money raised will go to The Children & Young People’s Cancer Association, where our friend Ben has a special named fund.

You can find out more about Ben at Pass The Smile For Ben and https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/pass-smile-ben where you will see that over £360,000 has already been raised in Ben’s name, which is just incredible.

A question that we are asked a lot at this time of year is whether you can sow any vegetable seeds in the autumn, and the answer is absolutely, yes!

As long as they are tolerant to cold conditions, seeds that are sown in autumn benefit from extra time to develop strong root systems while the soil is still warm, resulting in earlier harvests the next year, and garden space that is productive all year round.

You can find many suitable varieties in our seed range, and we currently have seed potatoes that can be planted now for Christmas harvest. Arriving very soon will be onion sets and garlic bulbs, as well as rhubarb crowns.

Did you know we absolutely love dogs?

We are a dog-friendly site, and we always love to see your four-legged friends when you visit the garden centre.

You’ll find a selection of dog treats in The Potting Shed Cafe, and we can always provide a bowl of water as needed.

We’d love to see photos of your dogs, bonus points if they’re at the garden centre!!

There is something so rewarding about growing your own fruit and vegetables, quite literally being able to see the fruits of your labour!

Nothing beats the taste of freshly-picked produce, and knowing exactly where your food has come from, and what’s been used to make it grow.
