This week's spotlight: Microsorum pteropus 'Narrow' 🌿

A slim, elegant take on the classic Java Fern — long, narrow, lance-shaped leaves in deep green on a slowly spreading rhizome. Same tough, reliable qualities as standard Java Fern, just in a more refined leaf shape that aquascapers love.

Like all Java Fern, attach it to wood or rock rather than burying the rhizome in substrate. Extremely low-light tolerant, undemanding, and shrimp safe — a great pick whether you're just starting out or after something a bit more slender-leaved for the tank.

Not exactly what I was expecting. They were much better than I thought they would be.

Ever stared at your tank wondering if you need a CO2 system? You're not alone — it's one of the most common questions we get.

Short answer: not always. Low-tech, slow-growing plants (Anubias, Java fern, mosses) do fine without it. But if you're running fast-growers or carpeting plants and growth has stalled or leaves are yellowing, CO2 might be the missing piece — not more fertiliser.

Signs you might need it: stunted new growth, algae creeping in despite good light and clean water, or plants that just sit there instead of filling out.

If your tank's ticking over fine without it, don't feel like you're missing out. CO2 is a tool for pushing growth, not a requirement for a healthy tank.
