Java fern might be the most forgiving plant in the hobby — and it's one people still get wrong.

The mistake: burying the rhizome in substrate. Java fern isn't a rooted plant — it's an epiphyte. Bury that thick horizontal stem and it rots. Instead, tie or glue it to wood or rock and let the roots grip on naturally.

Why it earns a place in almost any tank:
✅ Happy in low light — no fancy lighting needed
✅ No CO2 required
✅ Shrimp-safe
✅ Fish tend to leave it alone

Slow and steady grower. Give it a spot on your hardscape and forget about it.

Low light? No CO2? No problem. 🌿

Anubias nana is one of the easiest aquarium plants to keep — it thrives in low to moderate light and doesn't need CO2 at all, which makes it a solid pick if you're just starting out.

Attach it to rocks or driftwood rather than burying it in substrate — the rhizome will rot if it's covered. It's slow-growing, but that means less trimming for you.
