Ex commercial hens can be quite anxious when they first arrive. This is why we have added dried chamomile and lemon balm to our Rehome & Recoup to help keep them calm and reduce their anxiety. It won't take them long to settle into their new home 😀🐔

Crab Flies & Deer Keds.....Have you seen any?
Previously confined to the New Forest and parts of Scotland, these horrid bugs seem to be spreading. I have seen two in Devon this year already.
In autumn they fly off to find a host to supply them with blood meals while they reproduce. Once they land on a host they shed their wings as they intend to stick around for a few weeks. They burrow into the horses coat so the first thing you see is their abdomen, which looks a little bit like a large tick - until they run off!! 😱
A lot of horses become really distressed by crab flies causing a dramatic change in behaviour - bucking, extreme agitation (sometimes dangerous) and symptoms similar to severe colic (kicking at the belly, rolling, sweating etc)
These are really nasty critters - Have you seen them where you live?

If your hens don't enjoy eating their grit as much as these girls you aren't feeding them Gastro Grit!

Be Laminitis Aware!
Hard to believe these photos were taken just 3 weeks apart, and while the field is being grazed 24/7!
My cobs are still trying to convince me they are hungry though - but only because the grass is even greener on the other side of the fence....It is very hard to monitor them when the weather is so extreme, but with sunshine and showers predicted for the next couple of weeks, one thing for sure is that the grass is growing like crazy!
- monitor the amount of droppings your horse is producing
- reduce feed & hay in accordance with grass growth
- maintain regular exercise
-use a weigh tape to monitor weight gain
- don't rush for the rugs unless your horse genuinely needs one

Thank you Shelley for your great feedback........"After 2 years, the shells of the eggs from my Ex-Batt hens are thin, breaking and even deformed. They were ignoring the usual oyster shell/grit mix, so I decided to try Gastro Grit. They really seem to enjoy eating it. After a couple of weeks the shells started to get stronger. I am about to order again......"
