Let's talk about foxgloves as a cut flower.

Sometimes they get a bit of a bad rep!

And I get it, they're toxic
But only If ingested.

As are tulips, daffodils/Narcissi, lily of the valley, delphiniums, hydrangeas etc.

So as long as you're not sprinkling them on a salad and you're keeping them out of reach of little fingers or paws, you can admire them and use them in your cut flower arrangements just like many other flowers!

I'm absolutely loving this beautiful apricot coloured foxglove this year 😍

The farm mascot has been away on holiday for a good many weeks while we've been having our kitchen renovated at home, but she's back!

And modelling the most beautiful pale yellow/white sweet pea 😍

Quite often if you stop by for a bunch from the cart she will greet you with a volley of barks as all she wants is attention (i.e. treats 😂)

She's already sniffed out the mice in the greenhouse and has had a good rummage in some old tulips which nearly gave me a heart attack when I thought she'd eaten some.

Turns out the mice had eaten them instead 🤦🏼‍♀️

The cart will be out shortly with some freshly picked blooms!

If you're quick you might be able to grab one with a peony, they've just started to bloom properly in the field!

Happy Friday!

Hesperis, or sweet rocket.

One of the staple filler flowers here at Marsh Farm Flowers throughout May.

It comes in mainly white and purple but if you're lucky you may also get this beautiful pale pink.

It smells divine and produces clouds of little flowers that bob in the breeze bringing movement to arrangements.

It self seeds readily if left to go to seed and today I learned that it's edible! Learn something new every day!

Today the cart will be out with jam jar posies and we're in full swing planting out pretty much everything 🤣

Happy Friday!

Most mornings when I'm on the farm.

A moment of calm, a brief wander around the field looking to see what's coming out and what we have available for cutting.

Making notes to keep records

All with a cup of tea in hand (or left on a post and promptly forgotten!)

This morning I saw a hare wander through the field! Fairly sure had I not disturbed them they would have started munching on my seedlings but today I got away with it.

Nelly the dog has been on holiday recently while we're getting our kitchen renovated and I've definitely noticed more things being nibbled!

However the counter to that is her barking manically whenever I touch the hose pipe 🤣🤣

How incredible are broom flowers?!

I've actually never taken the time to fully appreciate them but after cutting some today I took a little moment, they're just spectacular 😍

Definitely going to invest in more colours for the field in the future!

Seasonal gift bouquet order from this week, full of purple hues of tulips, anemones, cerinthe and the first of the hesperis.

I really enjoyed putting this one together and the scent from the hesperis and mint was divine!

That's what you get from British-grown flowers, the amazing scent that comes from flowers grown down the road.

Flower farmers have to know when flowers are at their best for different situations.

Some flowers are better for events, some are better for gift bouquets as they have a good vase life, it all depends what we need them for.

We also need to know the perfect stage for cutting them and there are lots of tips and tricks for different flowers.

Anemones are a really easy one - they have a 'collar' and as the flower ages the collar moves further away from the flower head, so the one on the left is younger than the other two.

The collar starts off almost touching the flower so you can always tell how old your anemones are by their frilly collar!
