*New Book* - Woodham’s at Barry.

To be released on 1st May, this new book has been in the making for several years. Over 360 black & white and colour photographs portray the ultimate record of this famous yard at Barry which shaped the heritage railway map of Britain.

Within this new hardback book, the author, Roger Hardingham, details the background of the Woodham family and the town of Barry which grew into one of the most important ports in the country. The export of coal was its prime function but when this dropped off, Barry would become a haven for condemned steam locomotives from 1959 through to 1968. Dai Woodham became famous for scrapping thousands of withdrawn wagons and 'held' onto the engines until, in 1968, preservationists began to purchase them until in 1990, the yard was empty and 213 steam locomotives had been saved.

This book tells the story of the purchase of the engines and how they were moved out from South Wales to all parts of the UK. The people involved in the preservation attempts are covered and their trials and tribulations in raising funds to buy them.

The photographic record in the new book is from the best of photographers and show all aspects of this fascination story.

**The author will be signing copies at various locations, if you would like to have that at your shop, please advise.

New book 150 Years of the Settle-Carlisle Railway!

With just a few days left to post items before Christmas , we now have the new publication in stock celebrating 150 Years of the Settle-Carlisle Railway.

Order Your Copy to Avoid Disappointment -

‘150 Years of the Settle-Carlisle Railway’ A special publication dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the line. It was in 1875 that the first goods movements operated over the new Midland Railway route to Scotland. From 1st may 1876, the public were able to board the first trains which operated from Leeds, through Skipton and up to Settle and the border city of Carlisle.
This special tribute book covers the 150-year history from its 6-year construction showing very rare new photographs from that period, through to operations and gradual decline. The line made headlines in the early 1980s when efforts were made to close it completely, but fortunately local opposition would come to oppose that. With a starring role by the Friends of the Settle-Carlisle Line and other local organisations and individuals, the line was reprieved for good and is now a vibrant route with huge numbers of people travelling and a large freight train business.
Special Reports
1/. Freight Business by David Martin
2/. Managing the line post-reprieve in 1989 by Geoff Bounds
3/. Supporting the line today – by Bryan Gray
The books delves into all those fascinating aspects and is full of colour and black & white images. Edited by Roger Hardingham
Large format paperback, colour and black & white images, 175 mm x 273 mm, 48 pages £9.95
