A Bit Of Background – on this day in 1970 the British Navy ended a 300 year-old tradition of giving its soldiers a tot of rum, to much anguish amongst seafarers. The connection between the British navy and rum dates back to the mid 1600s, where, without the ability to desalinate sea water to a drinkable standard, water could only be picked up when the boats would reach land. Although this water was to drinkable, the wooden barrels used to store the water would develop algae and become slimy. Beer was rationed at a gallon per day, but as it was also perishable, the beer would go off. The sailors would drink the beer first before moving on to the water supplies. Who can blame them? Rum, however, is non-perishable, so once the British had colonised Jamaica (where rum was produced) rum served as the replacement for beer, beginning a three-century long tradition of British sailors drinking rum. In 1731 this tradition was officially recognised when the liquid was rationed to 275ml (or half a pint) of rum per sailor. As you can imagine, this amount of rum being given to each sailor daily resulted in significant drunkenness amongst the men, so as the years passed the rum mixture was diluted with sugar and lime juice, to prevent scurvy. As the decades passed and the navy became a more professional force the allowance of rum per sailor came under scrutiny, being reduced until it was completely abolished in 1970. Sailors famously wore black armbands and conducted mock funerals in protest and the House of Commons even debated and eventually established a fund for the seafarers as a means of compensation. To mark this historic day, we are drinking Black Tot Rum.
