🚨 LET’S TALK ABOUT COSMETIC SAFETY! 🚨
Something we think more people should know about when purchasing handmade bath, body and skincare products is CPSR compliance.
But what exactly is a CPSR, and why should you care? 🤔
🧴 WHAT IS A CPSR?
CPSR stands for Cosmetic Product Safety Report.
In the UK, cosmetic products must undergo a professional safety assessment before they can legally be placed on the market.
This includes products such as:
🩷 Body lotions and butters
🩷 Soaps and shower gels
🩷 Bath bombs and bath salts
🩷 Lip balms and scrubs
🩷 Shampoos and conditioners
🩷 Perfumes and body sprays
And plenty more!
🔬 WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT?
A CPSR isn’t just a certificate or another bit of paperwork.
It’s a detailed safety assessment carried out by a suitably qualified professional who examines the ingredients, their concentrations, potential risks and how the finished product will be used.
Just because an ingredient is natural, or a product is handmade, doesn’t automatically mean it’s safe!
Even ingredients that are perfectly safe in one product could be unsuitable at different concentrations or for different uses.
⚠️ HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW AS A CUSTOMER!
Before purchasing cosmetics, particularly from small businesses, craft fairs or online sellers, take a moment to check:
✅ Does the product have a proper ingredients list (INCI)?
✅ Is there a named Responsible Person and address on the packaging?
✅ Does it have a batch number or other identifying reference?
✅ Are the necessary warnings and usage instructions included?
✅ Can the seller confirm their products have undergone the required cosmetic safety assessments?
And please remember, handmade businesses are NOT exempt from these regulations! They are required even just to gift to friends and family!
A CPSR doesn’t have to be printed on the packaging, so you can’t determine compliance from the label alone. But a legitimate seller should understand their legal responsibilities and be able to answer reasonable questions about compliance.
