My name is Daniel Stuart. I’m the Managing Director and majority shareholder of Kristoffersen Carpets & Flooring.
I wanted to personally address the posts that have been circulating regarding Kieran Carnegie and stolen motorbikes in the local area.
We’ve read a lot of the comments and posts. We’ve seen a great deal of support, which we genuinely appreciate, but we’ve also seen a lot of misinformation and assumptions being made about Kristoffersen, our staff and people connected to the business.
So I think it’s important that I clarify a few things.
Kieran’s mum, Leigh, is a director of Kristoffersen. I’ve known Leigh for 25 years and, over a considerable period of time, I’ve watched her work tirelessly with the police, social work and other agencies trying to address the difficulties surrounding Kieran and his behaviour.
I want to make something very clear.
Kieran does not work for Kristoffersen Carpets. He has never worked for Kristoffersen Carpets and he will not be working for Kristoffersen Carpets.
Kieran is now 17 and no longer lives in Leigh’s home. He is responsible for his own actions.
Please share to all groups.
We absolutely condemn the theft of motorbikes, or anyone taking property that doesn’t belong to them. We know how hard people work to afford these things and how devastating it must be to have something you’ve worked hard for taken from you.
I also completely understand people’s frustration with what can sometimes appear to be a lack of consequences for young people involved in this type of behaviour.
The reality is that Scotland has a youth justice system which deals with people under 18 differently from adults. The police, social work and other agencies have processes they have to follow. Whatever people’s views are on that system, those decisions aren’t made by Leigh and they certainly aren’t made by Kristoffersen.
Unfortunately, we’ve also seen a large number of negative reviews being left against the business, many from people who have never been customers of Kristoffersen and which relate entirely to matters outside the company.
We understand people are angry, but targeting a local business and its employees over the actions of someone who has never worked here doesn’t punish that individual. It affects more than 50 innocent people and their families.
What I don’t think is fair is for the actions of someone who does not work for Kristoffersen to be attributed to more than 50 completely unrelated people who do.
Whatever allegations or issues exist outside this business should be dealt with by the appropriate authorities and by the individuals concerned. They are not matters involving Kristoffersen Carpets.
Kristoffersen has been part of this community for more than 30 years.
We have more than 50 local people working. We support local causes, local organisations and local businesses, and we’ve always tried to put something back into the communities that have supported us.
A lot of people reading this will know somebody who works for Kristoffersen, has worked for us in the past, or has been a customer of ours. I’d hope that the way we’ve treated people over those 30-plus years says more about who we are than the actions of somebody who has never been part of our company.
I know some people will still be angry, and I understand why, particularly the people who have had property stolen or damaged.
But I’d ask people to remember that the actions of individuals outside this business do not represent Kristoffersen or the more than 50 people whose livelihoods depend on it.
Leigh has tried for years to deal with an incredibly difficult situation. As a mum, she’s devastated by everything that’s happening.
She’s now made the decision to step back from the company while she processes everything that has happened.
We’re not asking anyone to excuse criminal behaviour.
We don’t excuse it either.
We’re simply asking people to separate the actions of individuals outside the company from Kristoffersen, our employees and their families, who have had absolutely nothing to do with any of this.
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to support us, to share the facts and to recognise that the actions of one individual should not define an entire business or the people who work within it.
We’ll continue to support our staff, our customers and our community, as we always have.
