For almost 12 years, whenever someone called Stan Beaton's home phone in Mirfield, England, and he didn't pick up, they heard the same voice.

His wife, Ruby.

She had recorded the greeting on their voicemail. Then, in 2003, she died of stomach cancer at 63. They had been married for 20 years.

Stan kept the message.

When he felt low, he would call his own number just to hear her.

Over the years, other phone companies tried to win his business. Every time, Stan asked the same question. Could they keep his wife's voice on the voicemail?

Every company said no. So he never switched.

Then, in December 2014, his provider, Virgin Media, upgraded his phone line. Stan had been told the recording would be safe.

It wasn't. Ruby's voice was gone.

Stan said he was devastated, and furious.

When Virgin heard his story, a team of 11 engineers went looking for the file. Their engineering director said it was like searching for a needle in a haystack.

It took them three days.

Then they found it.

A reporter from BBC Radio Leeds sat with Stan as the recording played. He broke down the moment he heard her.

"That's her," he said.

"It's just a wonderful, wonderful sound that I thought was lost forever" 🤍
