Did you know skin-pads only have a life cycle of around 5-10 years?

Pads themselves are made of organic material and become brittle over time resulting in a poor seal eventhough there are no tears.

Our instruments depend on having a good, airtight seal in order to play well

Takumi T300SR, a flute I hadn’t heard of until recently. Not until I took this flute in for an overhaul.

The Japanese Flute made by Shuichi Tanaka and Shigeru Watanabe was built in an effort to replicate the sought after sound of the Louis Lot Flutes. The two makers went on to be founding members of the renowned company Altus and Mateki Flutes.
Interestingly, they were also the first flutes to create the Bennett Scale which changes tone hole sizes/positions ever so slightly to improve the stability of notes. This is the scale that all Altus flutes now use too.
The craftsmanship of this flute is brilliant and I would thoroughly recommend this brand to all flautists. The tone is rich and thanks to a much-needed overhaul, the instrument sings! All ready for its owner to play in their orchestra next week

This Yamaha 221S was in for some much needed TLC and left the shop fully polished with all new pads and felt and playing wonderfully again.
All ready for those Christmas Concerts!

Woodwind Instruments have a lot of different moving parts and organic materials that can degrade over time (even if the instrument is not in use!)
This makes players think they need to do a lot more practicing when in reality, it’s the instrument needing a bit of TLC

Sometimes, a Full Service isn’t financially possible but for a quick Healthcheck (from £20), I can assess what work your instrument may need!

(A Full Service is when all keys and mechanisms are taken apart, cleaned, re-oiled and all pads checked thoroughly for tears and regulation changed where needed. It also includes 2 new pads if required.

A healthcheck, however, means the instrument is assessed with all keys are still attatched to the instrument)

Lots of cleaning of these two beautiful flutes today.

The Alto was originally booked in for a service but everything was working perfect. There was just some tarnish under all the key work but it is all shiny once again after it’s Cosmetic Clean. Ready to sparkle during those Christmas Consert Rehearsals!

The Yamaha 211 was a much needed Full Service with 4 pads being replaced and a very thorough clean and de-pinning! It now plays wonderfully again

Bass Clarinet in today for a mechanism clean/oil and a health check! Spotted a small crack so it’s a good job Bessie’s owner brought her in for an assessment

Last Friday, I took part in an Aspiration Day at Beeston Fields Primary School, showing and talking to the children all about Woodwind Instruments and what I do.
It did end up with me playing alot of Hedwig’s Theme on the Flute though!
