There’s no official certification for “sustainable” flowers. No governing body. No universal standard.
So the word only means something if you can actually explain your own choices, miles, growing methods, water and energy use, end of life, and construction.
Full breakdown in the video. Link in bio.

I love Instagram. My feed is full of florists who care about sustainable techniques, and I’d genuinely started to feel like that was just the direction the industry was heading.

So I was stopped in my tracks when the algorithm showed me a couple of reels of florists confidently demonstrating designs using floral foam, with tens of thousands of views between them.

It wasn’t the florists that shocked me. It was realising how much my own feed had been curating my sense of ‘normal.’ I’d started to think foam was becoming the exception. Clearly it isn’t, or not yet anyway.

Floral foam is still a plastic that doesn’t break down, and most florists using it were probably just never handed a proper alternative. Hopefully this isn’t because they don’t care about the environment, but because nobody showed them what’s possible without it.

That’s the gap I want to help close.

Is Instagram your cosy bubble too? Or has something recently shown you the industry’s a lot further from ‘foam-free’ than your feed makes it feel?

I’ve been growing flowers in the UK for years but does that make me a British flower grower?

I’ve always known rosemary is linked to remembrance, which is why it was the first herb I thought to include in the funeral leaflet I’m working on. But digging into the meanings of other herbs, I learned rosemary is actually a Mediterranean plant and not native to the UK at all.

That sent me down a rabbit hole. What about the flowers I grow? The seeds I sow? The bulbs I order?

Turns out most seeds sold here are just packaged in the UK, not harvested here. And those beautifully wrapped parcels I love getting from Farmer Gracy? Sent from the Netherlands. Slightly humbling, if I’m honest as I’d never really questioned it before.

So am I actually a British flower grower, when so much of what I use isn’t native or isn’t even from here?

Here’s what I’ve concluded: if it can grow in my garden without extra light or heat, I count it as mine to grow. However, as the climate warms, the range of what grows happily in a UK garden keeps expanding too.

So, what does it take to be called a British flower grower? I’d love to know what you think.

Check this out! There is a way to include letters into a funeral arrangement without resorting to floral foam, and it's a total game-changer! Just look at how beautifully it's nestled in amongst all the stunning, locally-grown seasonal flowers, foliage, and branches. The combination is simply breathtaking and adds a personal touch to the arrangement. It's amazing how something so simple can make such a big impact.

Not particularly flower-related but I wanted to share the fabulous deck that our daughter build in less than 36 hours this weekend - it really is spectacular and I am so impressed with her skills.

How big do you want to go? 🌸

I've photographed my different seasonal flower options together so you can compare sizes at a glance.

The jars contain the smallest, most delicate blooms. The cans are a mix of different sizes. The bouquets feature the larger headed blooms — all mixed with seasonal fillers and foliage.

Every arrangement features flowers grown without pesticides in my suburban garden in Littleover. I only pick to order, using whatever is freshest on the day, so what's included will depend on the time of year. I'll post regular updates so you know what's likely to be available when you order.

Collection only, from Littleover, Derby. DM me or order via the website: www.theposypatchderby.co.uk. I do need 24 hours' notice so I can cut and condition the flowers.

Know someone who'd love these? Please share! 🌸

Rainbow or shades of purple? Which of these jars would you choose?

I've always had a soft spot for purple and I do have loads of different types of purple flowers in the garden, so it does always come as a bit of a surprise that I can actually pick a whole rainbow of flowers to fill these jars. The blousy dahlias aren't blooming yet but I love to use these smaller headed flowers - and as I now have sweet peas to include the scent is amazing.

Pick up a jar in Littleover, Derby for £9 and I can even add a message if it's a gift. Send me a DM or order on the website.

I get real pleasure from growing the flowers that end up in these bouquets — right here in my garden in Littleover. Zero air miles, cut fresh, no flying halfway round the world to reach you.

These flowers smell the way flowers are supposed to smell, not the scentless, well-travelled stems you'll find in a supermarket.

Through winter and spring, every flower I grow goes into funeral work. But summer means I've got extras — bouquets, cans and jars, ready to bring some colour into your week or someone else's.

Fancy some? Message me or order through the website. Collection only, Littleover, Derby. Bouquets start at £25, cans are £12 and jars are £9.

I’ve been using compostable bags in my funeral floristry for a while now. But the more I looked into bioplastics, the more questions I had.

So I ran an experiment. And I filmed it.

The full video is now in the Resources section on my website — link in bio. Worth a watch if you care about sustainability and getting it right. 🌿
