Just Arrived - José Ramirez 4NE (2016)

A superb secondhand example of the José Ramírez 4NE, built in 2016 and presented here in near mint condition.

The 4NE was one of the top models in the Ramírez studio range, offering the classic Spanish character associated with the brand in a more accessible format than the fully handmade concert instruments. In the current Ramírez catalogue, the closest modern equivalent is the Estudio 3, making this 2016 4NE a very appealing option for players seeking an upper level Ramírez studio guitar.

Tonally, this guitar has the warmth, depth and directness that players desire in a Ramírez. The sound is gloriously rounded and full, with a strong fundamental, a singing treble, and the kind of musical character that makes lyrical repertoire particularly rewarding. Its character naturally lends itself to Spanish repertoire, while still perfectly suitable for music beyond this genre, such as music of the Renaissance and Baroque, as well as the ‘golden era’ of the classical guitar’s 19th-century composers, including Sor, Giuliani, Aguado and Carcassi etc.

The playability is comfortable and familiar, with a traditional 650mm scale and 52mm nut width. The guitar responds well under the right hand, giving the player a clear sense of control over tone colour, articulation and dynamics. It would suit an advancing player looking for a substantial upgrade from a student instrument, or an experienced guitarist wanting a reliable Spanish-made guitar with the Ramírez name and associated tonal character. As far as tone and character are concerned, this guitar is not at all dissimilar from the flagship José Ramírez 1A.

This particular example is in near mint condition, with only very minimal signs of use. It has clearly been very well looked after, making it a particularly attractive secondhand option for players who want the value of a pre-owned instrument without many of the usual cosmetic compromises.

Built with a solid spruce soundboard and solid Indian rosewood back and sides, the 1A has the depth and colour you’d expect to find from a high quality Spanish guitar maker.

The tonal signature of Amalio Burguet guitars is one that is rich and immersive, with a wide range of colours under the fingers. Whilst there is plenty of dynamic headroom available, Burguet guitars have a magical way of pairing this with a softer ‘attack’ than most other Spanish guitars, which provides a sense of refinement that is sometimes lacking in other guitars at this price point. That’s it! Our time at this year’s is over. And so concludes a most rewarding and thoroughly enjoyable musical experience. Meeting with dozens of luthiers, talking guitar nonstop for 3 days and extensively playing the very finest classical guitars Italy has to offer. New friends were made as well as chance meetings with friends from years gone by. It’s now decision time to see which of these most excellent guitars will make the cut and find their way into our shop. Stay tuned for some announcements over the coming days and weeks…
