It's been another busy year – and we finally managed to get Fodderty Lodge on the market in June. If you fancy relocating and a new challenge...!

Mia has mostly been teaching leatherwork and working on mail order commissions, but issues with her fingers and wrists has meant that she is having to downsize the leather business. Mia is waiting for treatment options, so hopefully will be able to regain better mobility in the near future. But currently we are now only taking commissions from existing customers with the understanding that delivery times may be lengthy. Nevertheless, we are still enjoying the life The Highlands has to offer.

Wishing you every success in 2026 and beyond.

I had this leatherwork/saddlery stitching horse made in plywood but have never used it. The leather strap still needs attaching. I gave a carpenter a pattern from an old harness book, cost me £600 to make.

I felt the clam section was too rounded for finer work and now I'm mostly working on watch straps, this is too big for me.

Collection from Fodderty or can deliver around Dingwall/Inverness

Did you know we offer one-to-one leather training in the Highlands?

I've been teaching this couple since early 2022 and I'm so impressed with the work they are creating. Today we starting on wet-moulding quite a deep case, learning how to stretch the leather over a wooden mould.

They've made journals, tool cases, pet collars, belts, knife cases, Viking pouches, and the projects increase in complexity each month (gets me scratching my head 😂).

When they joined, we started learning about leather types, types of tools needed (economy vs pro), hand cutting, hand stitching and burnishing, pattern making, and design. Although this couple don't want to make professionally, they are having a wonderful session, chatting and learning at the same time! Watch out for leather Christmas presents 😉

I have also announced that I will be teaching leatherwork to a kilt-maker in 2025 as part of their QEST training 👍

Do you need to learn anew, or brush up on skills?
Do you just fancy making something in a relaxed environment?

Get in touch if you want to learn about leather ❤️

Huge thanks to The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST)

Chuffed to bits for their support to foster new creative collaborations in kiltmaking, to develop my practise further in the related fields of colour, cloth and construction.

I’ll be working with craftspeople across Scotland who are bringing heritage techniques into a modern context in innovative ways; colourist/dyer Cavan Jayne MacPherson , Christopher McEvoy and Chantal Allen handwoven passimenterie / handweaver of plant fibres Lynne Hocking and leather worker Mia Sabel

Excited and very grateful to join the other scholars, emerging makers and apprentices as part of this fantastic charity.
The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST) is a charity that transforms the careers of talented and aspiring makers by funding their training and education, creating pathways to excellence and strengthening the future of the UK’s craft sector.

QEST has awarded more than £6.5 million to over 800 craftspeople working across the UK in 130 different craft disciplines. From guitar making to woodturning, thatching to enamelling, QEST embraces craft in all its many forms and are proud to contribute towards its evolving tradition.
