£45 Vintage Handmade Marquetry Wood Picture London Fleet Street Street Scene 20.5” x 17.5 inches
A superb and unusual vintage handmade marquetry / wood veneer picture, measuring approximately 20.5 x 17.5 inches (52 x 44.5 cm) overall.
This wonderfully detailed piece depicts a bustling old London street scene, apparently centred around the Fleet Street area and featuring the famous Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese.
The picture has been painstakingly constructed from numerous individually shaped pieces of contrasting wood and veneer, with painted and drawn details bringing the scene to life.
There is a tremendous amount going on in the picture, including an early motor car, horse-drawn carts and carriages, policeman, pedestrians in period costume, shop fronts, street lamps and advertising signs.
Various names and signs appear throughout, including:
R. & C. Singleton – 1979–80
Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese
Bruce Emery & Russell
Tuckley & Lupton
Nightingale – Spring Bank Place
Crofer & Broadley
Lodge of Charity 4106
Dixon & Matthews
The 1979–80 inscription incorporated into the Singleton frontage is particularly interesting and may provide a clue to the date or inspiration for the work.
