Posted • October's birthstones are some of the most colorful gems on the planet—opal and tourmaline. Opal exhibits a phenomenon called play-of-color that causes rainbow flashes of light. This occurs when neatly-stacked silica spheres that make up opal diffract white light entering the gem, separating it into spectral colors.

Tourmaline exists in a rainbow of colors, from red to green to neon blue. It can also exhibit multiple colors in the same gem. One fun color combination, sometimes called watermelon tourmaline, has red or pink in the center, surrounded by green. Tourmaline derives its color from different elements that are incorporated into its crystal structure during growth.
