Who else thinks creativity is in the blood? Can creativity be learned? Are we all creative and some just get into the flow of creating more easily than others?
I was asked where my love of making and being creative comes from a little while back and I've given it a huge amount of thought since. I think mine is in my blood, there naturally, I come from a very long line of documented historical weavers whose impact on the textile industry was experienced in the UK in the 19th and 20th centuries, but that is another story.
I think there is a need in every one of us to make something. Think of engineers and architects or computer programmers, game creators, i could go on and then there's the obvious artists and weavers and bakers, actors, dancers and so many more, each of them living in a creative way.
But what about those who don't seem to have the inspiration or ability to see that what they make is creative? Or even worse, have been told they are no good at making or are really not creative?
I watched a lady making some wire flowers a little while back. The whole way through the process she was saying how she isn't creative and finds it challenging to make things and how she hadn't been encourage to try much because others hadn't seen what she had to offer. We sat together for a bit, shared some tips and examples of making and then made flowers together. What she landed up creating had me wishing I could do what she did. People have paid me large amounts for my art, but the twists in the wire she created stopped me in my tracks and had me studying her flowers just to see how the twists were made. I could see a beauty I wasn't expecting and had to encourage her to see it too.
We both left that class feeling like we had achieved a new level of understanding when making things and both learnt something new about ourselves. What a privilege it was to see her grow and relax into making something.
I don't think I have even started to answere my original questions about where creativity comes from, but I am formulating some ideas and looking forward to working with many more people, sharing this creative path.
