We test the NEW ePropulsion Spirit 2… and it changes the world of small portable electric outboards! (Now you can get a small dinghy up on the plane)

UPDATE- more testing today. An ePropulsion Spirit PLUS at full power (1kW) gave us 4.3 knots, which is about what we’d expect, and similar to Torqeedo Travel etc. The new Spirit 2 at 2kW gave us 7.4 knots. Same dinghy, same person, same conditions (tests within 5 mins of each other).

Whilst 7.4 knots or 13.7km/h is not particularly “fast” in absolute terms it is definitely a lot faster than displacement hull speed for a boat of this size (which is about 4 knots). Whether that is or isn’t planing, which some of the comments question, it’s nonetheless true that the new Spirit 2 is a lot faster than 1kW electric outboards… And enables a small lightly loaded dinghy to significantly exceed hull speed.
