Davis Tackle are located at the entrance to the famous Royalty Fishery in Christchurch where we have been dispensing tackle and specialist advice to coarse, sea and game anglers for over 70 years. Having tripled the size of the shop over the past few years we now stock all the major suppliers across every fishing discipline and are able to display a massive range of rods and reels in the shop. We now have an extensive fly tying department to complement our range of over 800 different ready tied flies. Situated between the Royalty and Throop fisheries we hold one of the largest ranges of barbel rods and centrepins available anywhere, including our own exclusive range of Harrison rods. I’ve just uncovered a photo of my personal PB in life hanging onto her own fishing PB leaving the Tyrrells Ford Hotel after she won it in the Roach Project Auction. 😂

We both really miss those annual get togethers with Budgie and Trev and all the other like minded roach anglers we’d catch up with every year.

Good luck to everyone planning to fish the Royalty tomorrow on the magical June 16th. Whilst we don’t miss the early starts, we certainly miss sharing the excitement of opening day with you all.

Back in the days before Facebook we used to do our best to publish a Royalty Report including photos on the same evening and send it out by email. The mailing list at its height was approaching 8k members, but within a few years sadly social media killed it off.

Happy memories of a different era.

This was probably my favourite shop window display of them all in over 20 years, and for most of them we had three windows to do.

Id met the absolute star Mike O’Neill through Trefor around the time Mike launched Lone Angler to the tackle trade. He was just brilliant to work with, what I saw as a problem he saw as an opportunity. The best example that comes to mind is when I said I couldn’t stock his new baits as I didn’t have any shelf space.

A week later he had a carpenter in to move two existing shelves and fit a third!😂

The tackle was also proudly manufactured in the UK.

Obviously the display was done by Lone Angler, there’s no chance that I, Helen, Jon or Pete could have done such a great job.

I’ve still got this copy of the Angling Times from October 1972. Back then I was a 12 year old school kid that was obsessed with barbel and the Royalty and I still remember the excitement of reading this that first time.

It’s an interesting read and shines a light on just how much barbel fishing has changed in half a century. Younger anglers reading this might be astonished at the tactics, and particularly the breaking strain of mainline Jack used, but those tactics were unbelievably successful back then.
