Choosing books for a school or nursery isn't just about filling a bookshelf. ๐Ÿ“š
I think it's about finding books that children can connect with.
Books that reflect things they're interested in.
Books that explore the world they're growing up in.
Books that give them something they want to read about.
Because if a book catches their interest, that's a pretty good place to start building a love of reading.
What makes you choose a particular book for the children in your setting?

Every school wants children to read.

But I think the ultimate goal is for them to want to read.

To find a book that interests them.

A story they want to continue.

A subject they want to know more about.

Because when children find books they enjoy, reading can become something they choose to do โ€” not just something they're asked to do.

What do you think helps children develop a love of reading?

A book can be fun and still have a place in school. ๐Ÿ“š

I think children should enjoy the books they read.

But when you're choosing books for a school or nursery, they also need to have a purpose.

A book that supports a topic you're teaching.

A book that helps develop reading skills.

A book that sparks questions, conversation and curiosity.

And, importantly, a book that makes a child want to pick it up.

Because supporting reading development doesn't have to mean taking the enjoyment out of reading.

The best books can do both.

What makes a book a good choice for your school or nursery?

What if their love of games could lead them to books? ๐ŸŽฎ๐Ÿ“š
Not every child is going to reach for a traditional storybook.
And that's okay.
Sometimes the way into reading is finding a book that connects with something they're already interested in.
Game books can be a great option for children who love puzzles, challenges, characters and gaming.
They can make picking up a book feel familiar and fun.
And once a child finds a book they enjoy, you never know where that might lead.
Because reading for pleasure starts with wanting to pick up the book.
If you're looking for ways to encourage children who aren't naturally drawn to books, I'd love to hear what you're finding works in your school or nursery.

Schools and nurseries have to make every pound count.
But when we're talking about children having access to books, I don't think a tight budget should mean they miss out.
Every child deserves the chance to discover a book they love.
A story that makes them laugh.
A character they can't stop thinking about.
A book they can't put down.
That's why I'm passionate about finding affordable ways for schools and nurseries to get more books into children's hands.
Because the budget might be tight. The ambition for children's reading doesn't have to be.

What if helping children read more starts with helping them find a book they can't put down? ๐Ÿ“š
Reading for pleasure isn't about making children read because they have to.
It's about finding the stories, characters and subjects that make them want to keep turning the pages.
That moment when they say:
โ€œCan I read one more chapter?โ€
That's what we're looking for.
And that's why I believe getting more books into children's hands matters.
Because sometimes, finding the right book is all it takes to start building a love of reading.

What was the book you couldn't put down as a child?

No matter the budget, every child deserves a book. ๐Ÿ“š
Schools are trying to do so much with so little.
They know how important reading for pleasure is. They know some children don't have books at home. And they know every pound has to be carefully considered.
But that doesn't change what children deserve.
A chance to discover a book they love.
A story they want to read again.
A book of their own.
Tight budgets shouldn't mean those opportunities disappear.
There are affordable ways for schools and nurseries to put more books into children's hands.
And that's exactly why I'm passionate about helping them find those opportunities.
If your school is trying to get more books into children's hands without stretching the budget, I'd love to hear from you.

Send me a message and let's have a chat.

Looking for a simple way to keep children reading over the summer? โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ“š
Reading doesn't have to feel like homework.
This Reading Bingo sheet is a fun way to encourage children to explore different types of books, whether they're reading in the garden, on holiday or curled up on the sofa.
The aim isn't to complete every square.
It's to help children discover new stories and keep reading for pleasure throughout the summer.
๐Ÿ’› Which square do you think would be ticked off first in your house?
๐Ÿ“Œ Save this post for the holidays or share it with someone looking for reading ideas.

Why this book means so much to me... ๐Ÿ“š
There are lots of children's books I enjoy, but this one has a special place in my heart.
Grandpa Frank's Great Big Bucket List didn't just make me smile.
It reminded me of my dad.
As I read it, I could picture him getting up to exactly the same kind of mischief with my son. Those moments made me laugh, but they also made me realise just how precious those memories are.
That's one of the things I love most about children's books.
They're not just stories.
They help children imagine, laugh, ask questions and create memories that stay with them long after the final page has been turned.
That's why I believe every child deserves access to books they'll want to pick up again and again.
Have you ever read a children's book that reminded you of someone you love? I'd love to hear which one. โค๏ธ
