Join me this December for a cosy and creative evening at Stella's Larder Driffield , where we’ll gather together to create a beautiful candlelit centrepiece for your festive table.

Using sustainable floristry techniques, we’ll work with fresh locally grown foliage and organic elements slow-dried from the cutting garden, carefully chosen for their texture, shape and winter character. Your arrangement will be created in a ceramic bowl with a paraffin-free taper candle, ready to take home and enjoy throughout Christmas.

I’ll guide you through each stage, sharing some of the curious stories, traditions and folklore connected with the winter greenery we’ll be using.

Your evening also includes a festive drink from Stella’s selection and delicious nibbles, with an opportunity to shop at Stella’s Larder and choose some special pieces for your Christmas table.

Hello, autumn 🍂

This week marks the beginning of meteorological autumn, and there’s always a little shift in the garden at this time of year.

There are still plenty of beautiful blooms in the cutting patch… flowers to gather, enjoy and make the most of while they last. But quietly, the garden is already looking ahead.

There’s something rather lovely about this point in the year. Traditionally, September was a time for gathering and saving seed from the season just passed, while preparing the ground for what would come next.

And that same rhythm continues here. My first batch of hardy annual seeds for next season has been sown, and they’re quietly growing away. The biennials are ready to go into the ground, too.

Just as one season begins to fade, the next is already taking root…

I’m delighted to invite you to my Christmas Wreath Making Experience at Wassand Hall Official , East Yorkshire, on Saturday 5th December.

Set within the historic surroundings of the Hall’s stable courtyard, join me for an unhurried afternoon of seasonal creativity, good company and Christmas indulgence.

We’ll begin with a little of the history and folklore behind the Christmas wreath, before I guide you through the techniques to create your own beautiful, natural wreath.

Then, surrounded by an abundance of seasonal materials, you can begin to bring your own wreath to life…

Choose from freshly cut winter greenery, organically grown and slow-dried elements, and beautiful velvet and satin ribbons to create something entirely your own.

Enjoy tea, coffee, warming mulled punch, mince pies and other festive treats as you create, and take a little time away from the Christmas rush.

A little seed saving this afternoon…

I’m processing my cornflower seed, breaking open the dried flower heads to reveal the tiny seeds tucked inside. They’re such lovely little things, each one looks like a miniature paintbrush…

I really enjoy saving my own seed, and I find that seed saved from my own plants often germinates more readily for me. There’s something rather satisfying about collecting it at the end of the season and knowing that, very soon, I’ll be sowing the next generation.

And while I’m doing it, I’m thinking about the folklore surrounding cornflowers. They’ve long been associated with hope and love. It’s said that in medieval times unmarried women wore cornflowers in their hair to show that they were eligible for marriage, and looking for a husband…

… not so subtle!

I love these stories and folklore traditions that sit behind the flowers I grow. Somehow, knowing them makes even the simple job of saving a handful of seeds feel that little bit more special.

This December, I’ll be hosting a very special Christmas wreath-making experience at the beautiful Wassand Hall Official , East Yorkshire.

And this will be a little different…

We’ll begin with a fascinating introduction to the history and folklore of the Christmas wreath, exploring some of the traditions, symbolism and stories woven into this much-loved festive decoration.

Then, you’ll be guided through a wreath-making masterclass, using beautiful seasonal materials, with plenty of tips, techniques and expert guidance along the way.

The result? A unique wreath you’ve created yourself, to take home and enjoy throughout the festive season. 🎄

A little creativity, a little Christmas magic, and a beautiful setting in which to spend a December afternoon…

While this summer’s flowers are still in full bloom, I’m already looking ahead to the weddings of 2027…

I’m planning next spring’s cutting garden, choosing the flowers that will be at their very best for spring weddings.

There’s something rather special about knowing that the flowers you’ll carry down the aisle began life months before your wedding day, nurtured through the changing seasons before becoming part of your celebration.

From delicate tulips and scented narcissi to romantic ranunculus and other treasured spring favourites, every seed, bulb and corm is chosen with the season ahead in mind.

A huge thank you to the lovely ladies of Tibthorpe for such a warm welcome on Wednesday evening. I had a wonderful time sharing the history and heritage of flower arranging, along with some of the folklore, traditions and stories surrounding our favourite summer blooms.

There was plenty of flower chat, a little bit of history, and even an arrangement made during the evening… which was won by this lovely lady!

I absolutely love sharing the stories behind flowers and exploring the traditions that have shaped the way we arrange and enjoy them today. It was such a pleasure to spend the evening with a group of people who share that same curiosity and love of flowers.

A very special evening at Sledmere House…

Team Esther in the Garden were kindly invited to an evening soirée in the beautiful Walled Garden at Sledmere House, to celebrate its place as one of just six finalists for the Garden of the Year award 2026, in association with Christie's

And what a lovely evening it was…

We had the chance to wander through the glorious 18th-century Walled Garden, taking in the beautiful planting, and chatting with members of the gardening team about the care and work that goes into looking after this stunning garden.

Sledmere is the only garden in Yorkshire to have made this year’s shortlist, alongside five other wonderful historic gardens from across the UK, so it feels particularly special to have been invited to celebrate with them.

Historic houses and their gardens have always felt very much like home to me, having spent nearly 20 years working in the heritage world. And there’s an extra special connection with Sledmere… I volunteered here as a teenager, so to find myself back in the Walled Garden all these years later, now through Esther in the Garden, felt rather lovely indeed.

A huge congratulations to everyone at Sledmere. The dedication of the gardening team really shines through, and the Walled Garden is quite something.

If you haven’t visited yet, I really hope you’ll make time to go and see it for yourself this summer.

Sledmere is flying the flag for Yorkshire in this year’s awards, so please do cast your vote and help this beautiful garden take the title!

High summer in the cutting garden…

Dahlias, asters, zinnias, cosmos, grasses and all sorts of cottage garden favourites are filling my buckets at the moment.

This week they’ve been gathered into bouquets and arrangements, as well as flowers for a couple of lovely events. It’s such a beautiful point in the season… when the garden is abundant and there’s so much to gather.

There are still plenty of flowers to come, but the season won’t last forever. If you’d like some seasonal flowers for a celebration, an event, or simply to enjoy at home, do get in touch…

I just ask for at least 24 hours’ notice so I have time to cut, condition and carefully arrange your flowers.

The flower that travelled from China to the heart of the British cottage garden…

Each August, as they begin to bloom in my Yorkshire Wolds cutting garden, I find myself thinking of eighteenth-century chinoiserie fabrics… soft, painterly hues, delicate florals and an enduring fascination with the beauty of the East.

Although the fashion for chinoiserie was already sweeping through Britain, China Asters (Callistephus chinensis) arrived in Europe during the late eighteenth-century. Native to China and Korea, they soon found their way into British gardens, where they became treasured for flowering just as many summer blooms were beginning to fade.

Victorian gardeners couldn’t get enough of them. Plant breeders transformed the simple wild flower into the beautifully quilled, incurved and pompon blooms we adore today.

I love imagining the journey these flowers have taken… from the mountains and grasslands of East Asia to my own small cutting garden here in the Yorkshire Wolds.
