The dreaded C19/lockdown has affected us all, none more so than South West Fishing For Life or Swiffle as its affectionally know....the girls have been doing their best and getting by using WhatsApp and zoom .....Today however was different at long last we can meet on the bank of our spiritual home that is Wimbleball Lake....yep it was flipping cold in and out of the water, I couldn’t see any fish moving so it was on with sink tips or clear intermediate lines and beaded flies to “fish the layers” ....these ladies can fish and proved it was technique over distance.....well done one and all ....and special thanks to Trudi and Mark for allowing us to fish their so very special venue 👍🎣

What a fabulous day on Exmoor....much too nice not to wet a line, I sat on the river bank quietly studying the river looking for signs of life ... sedge were skittering across the surface accompanied by a few splashy rises ....as I sat there with my feet dangling in the river a female Grayling and of a decent size was burying into the gravel turning over stones looking for nymphs and then enter stage right a beautiful looking Green Eel with a body as thick as your arm swam at my feet before disappearing into the luxurious growth of ranunculus ..... a Kingfisher scooted down the river and a Frog croaked in the background....it was good to be back.
A couple of weeks ago I placed a hollowed out log into the back eddy of a pool to see what it would attract....I wasn’t dissapointed, it was a real Trout’s larder with just about every water insect clinging onto the underside of it ...shrimps, caddis, stonefly, march brown nymphs and pride of place went to a water stick insect....the stonefly is an early season T Bone for a Trout check out the size of it next to a size 10 long shank French Partridge.
What a lovely afternoon wading up the river...oh yeah I forgot, I managed to catch a three inch wild brownie that made my day 👀🎣😂

The season is just around the corner, the last two days on Exmoor have been particularly stormy ....heavy overnight rain has brought river levels up and probably put paid to any fishing on DAA beats for a few days...if you are venturing out please be careful when wading and always have a wading staff to hand....many anglers also wear a life jacket, mine is very light and unobtrusive. Here is a definitive guide to what we as anglers can do and not do according to latest government guidelines

These are the key dates for fishing as lockdown is eased:

29/March Fishing fully open subject to the rule of six, or two households, with no restrictions on travel.

12/April Fishing tackle stores open, as is all retail. Self-catering accommodation reopens and domestic overnight stays now allowed. Pubs, hotels, cafes etc. open for outdoor seated service.

17/May Hotels, inns and B&Bs open. Pubs, restaurants, cafes etc. open for indoor dining. Rule of six and two household rule no longer applies to fishing.

All the above is subject to the usual social distancing protocols. Currently all visitors arriving from overseas must quarantine for 10 days on arrival. This advice will be reviewed by the government 12/April but international travel will not resume before 17/May earliest.

Wimbleball opening day, 4.30am can’t sleep, kettle on first brew of the day, check out side ....white frost ...it’s going to be a cold one! Even after so many years the opening day of a season excitement is still there ....and long may it continue ....this year for those of us lucky enough to live close enough Wimbleball fishery was in perfect nick, it was plain to see a lot of hard work on the banks had been carried out for the benifit of anglers and the fishing was simply sublime...
I arrived at the bank to watch the moon dip behind the trees and the sun start to rise, the lake was still save for fish breaking the glass like surface, icy margins greeted me.....icy fingers soon followed as the first cast was made, these fish are truly stunning to catch, I always opt for the C&R ticket, you keep the first two then release any more you catch....the fly line was well and truly stretched ....what a way to start the season ....🎣👍

Beautiful Exmoor Spring sunshine today, a way out of the C19 crisis thanks to the wonderful NHS, Wimbleball about to open this weekend and a visit to a private lake high up on Exmoor today with a stunning Brownie safely returned ...... there is hope for a brighter future and to get your fly line stretched! 🎣

What do you do on a rainy Wednesday afternoon? Answer go for a walk along the river and rescue frogs spawn...every year frogs lay their spawn in this forest track that runs alongside the DAA Hollam beat and every year the track dries up in April/May, the spawn has now been moved to a lovely secure pond that has a high rise log pile next to it where froglets can spend the summer safe, secure, grow fat, be very happy and hopefully learn some sense!....ah as to the fishing less than a month away now before the rivers open...this pool with a fast run, riffle and crease will soon hold some beautiful wild trout that will rise happily to a well placed fly 🎣

Exmoor was bathed in sunshine this morning and a walk along the river was in order....the Trout haven’t returned to their lies yet and won’t until April but I did see a March Brown skipping across the river and couldn’t help get that tingle of anticipation you get when the season is a little over a month away...in the meantime the Spring flowers are enjoying the sun and the first shoots of wild Garlic are just showing....

Fishing brings togetherness and happiness in spadefuls as does Wimbleball resevoir....today it was cold and grey but that didn’t stop these two SWFFL ladies.....they say a picture tells a thousand words so I’ll leave it there...

The Trout season is a distant memory and the new season seems like an eternity away, the leaves have fallen from the trees and the rivers have had a good flush out, there was a chill in the air today and a watery sun.....a good friend asked me if we could go Grayling fishing......dust off the rods.....pink nymphs fished “euro” style or casts upstream under a bubble sedge brought results..... black “cowboy” coffee, mince pies....it was a fine afternoon 🎣👍

The river trout season might be over but that doesn’t stop the want in me to walk our rivers and streams of Exmoor, today was no exception....the often neglected streams flowing north off Dunkery’s slopes hold beautiful jewels in their pocket waters....Spring time these hungry little fish will rise readily to a well placed DD on the finest of tackle...
