We move the birds not the muck!

Just reading an article from about how 33,450 tonnes of manure is produced by intensive poultry and pig factory farms EVERY DAY!! You can rear a lot of birds in big sheds but you also need a lot of land to spread that much muck. It definitely doesn’t always end up where it should. Ours goes directly onto the ground and stays there, the chickens move on!

It’s amazing to think that it’s been nearly six months since our first delivery of chicks came to the farm.

Our little brooder where the chicks lived for the first few weeks is now a worm farm 🪱 inspired by

We’d deep littered the bedding and you can see the bottom couple inches had already started to decompose. We piled it up and dampened it some more to aid decomposition and then some worms from the muck heap were added. Over the next few months they should eat away at the bedding and it will turn into some turbo charged compost to go back on the land! I hope they’re hungry 🪱 🐥 🌱
