IMPORTANT NOTICE:
This page will be CLOSING in the near future. I just don't have the time to be admin of two different pages and, in all honesty, traffic on this site has slowed considerably. However, I will be concentrating on being Admin of We worked at Kwik Save and I'd LOVE it - if you haven't done so already - if you'd become a member of this page. Finally, thank you all so, so much for your support on Kwik Save Employees North East.

For those of you who watched the three-part series on Channel 5 - 'Secrets of the 1970s Supermarkets' and were disappointed that Kwik Save did not receive a single mention, Phil Roberts suggested I contact Channel 5 and request an explanation. So, I have done:
Hi,
I (and a lot of my ex-Kwik Save colleagues) were really looking forward to the three-part series 'Secrets of the 1970s Supermarket'.
However, although we did enjoy it for what it was, we were very surprised - even shocked - that Kwik Save (a discount supermarket chain that began life as Value Foods in 1959, before converting to Kwik Save in 1965) didn't even warrant a cursory mention. It seems that the only supermarkets that the production company were aware of were Tesco, Sainsbury, Marks & Spencer, Bejam and Iceland. I wonder if any of these companies may have made a cash donation in exchange for enhanced coverage?
My colleagues and I were aghast that such a key player in the food discount sector as Kwik Save was in the 1970s (and beyond - finally folding in 2007) was completely overlooked. Can you offer any explanation as to why this was, please?
And, might you consider commissioning a programme of the same ilk (perhaps 'The 1970s Discount Supermarkets') that would redress the balance?
I (and I'm sure many of my former colleagues) would be only too happy to offer any assistance you may require.
I look forward to your reply.
Kind regards,
Steve Cain

Of course, I shall let you know if/when I receive a reply - and what they say!

HEAD CASHIER ROLE

Having contacted several friends who were former Area Supervisors, I have established the following:

Head Cashiers assisted the Cash Office Supervisor and/or the Assistant Cash Office Supervisor. They could oversee the front end operation, perform voids/refunds, and hold the float box (up to a maximum of £200), which had to be handed back to a member of management at close of business. They were NOT permitted to hold the main safe or any keys overnight. They received an enhancement in the form of a Head Cashier bonus.

Okay, share your knowledge and pearls of wisdom!

I am aware that there was a Head Cashier role within Kwik Save, although I never encountered any in my time with the company. Not even sure there were any in the North East.

Can anyone tell me anything about the role? Obviously, they assisted the Cash Office Supervisor, I realise that. But, were they bonded? Could they hold the safe or the float box or neither? Could they perform voids and refunds? What was the scope/limitations of the role?

Any feedback greatly appreciated!

Do you have any photographs of old Kwik Save stores you'd like to share? We'd LOVE to see them!

They could be from when they still had a Kwik Save fascia, or before, or after. Take a look at these beauties of Forest Hall - past and present!

So, just to clarify ... the stores I worked in were:

Byker, Wallsend, Norham Road, Battle Hill, Forest Hall, Gosforth, Benwell, Stanley, Felling, Framwellgate, Prudhoe. I also worked at Birtley and Whitley Bay - but don't have photos of the last two.
