The World Cup panels of the 70s, 80s, 90s
and even into the 2000s looked very different to what we see today.

Back then, broadcasters often turned to former players and managers who had experienced the game at the very highest level. The discussions could be blunt, opinionated and sometimes a bit chaotic, but many viewers felt they got an honest insight into what was happening on the pitch.

Today, panels tend to be more varied, with a mix of former professionals, journalists, presenters, pundits and, increasingly, personalities from outside traditional broadcasting.

Football coverage has undoubtedly become more polished and professional, but some fans still miss the old-school style where it felt like you were listening to a group of seasoned football people talking about the game over a pint.

What do you think of the change? Has football punditry improved, or do you prefer the way it used to be?

When Sir Bobby Robson finished his last chemo session in 2007, Dr Ruth Plummer pulled him aside.
She needed help - her department was outdated and they’d planned a new cancer unit but had no money to kit it out. Did he know anyone who could help?
He took it home to his wife Elsie. She backed it immediately and the phone started ringing. A committee formed. The idea came up: use his name, set up a charity.
He wasn’t comfortable at first, but once his name was on it, there was no turning back.
The target: £500,000 by summer 2008.
The launch at the Copthorne Hotel took off instantly. Des Lynam, Bob Wilson and Jim Rosenthal showed up for nothing but goodwill.
Seven weeks later, they’d raised £560,000.
Today, the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation has raised over £20 million.
Legend. ❤️👏

Dino Zoff recalling managing Paul Gascoigne at Lazio 😂

"He ate ice cream for breakfast, drank beer for lunch &, when injured, blew up like a whale. But as a player? Oh, beautiful, beautiful. I loved that boy. He was a genius, an artist, but he made me tear my hair out.”

“I have always admired the artists, the ones who are the creators. The goalkeeper creates nothing. He made me crazy with rage, I was sorry for him, he threw away his art in a bad way.”
