Meet the Makers: Diane Shadforth of Amerston Woolcrafts

Having been taught to knit by her grandmother at just four years old, Diane Shadforth founded Amerston Woolcrafts with her daughter after attending a ‘living rug’ workshop led by the Wild Wool Shepherdess in Nottingham several years ago.

A farmer by trade, Diane and her flock are based near Hartlepool, and each of her creations is made using wool from her own and her daughter’s flocks of rare-breed sheep. Every rug is lovingly crafted from the fleece of a single sheep — Diane can even tell you exactly which sheep each rug came from, and which shear was used.

The wool is processed entirely by hand, taking it through every stage from raw fleece to finished piece. While Diane enjoys working with a variety of breeds, wool from her daughter’s flock of Wensleydale sheep is a favourite to work with, thanks to its luxurious, lustrous locks.

We first spotted Diane’s beautiful creations at and fell in love with them instantly. We’re so excited to be partnering with our Fowlers Yard neighbour on this launch.

Visit us both at Fowlers Yard to view the collection in person, or shop the edit online:

We’re so pleased to welcome Lionmouth Rural Centre to the April 11 community 🌿
Set on the edge of Durham, the team there create a safe, supportive space for people with mental health, social and learning disabilities through hands-on activities including horticulture, crafts and conservation.
We’re now stocking a small selection of their hardy, Northern-grown herbs at our space in Fowlers Yard — we picked our favourites from lavender, peppermint and chamomile to thyme and tarragon - they all smell amazing! Our herb of the week is sage 🌿
And if you can, we really recommend a visit to their centre in Esh Winning: beautiful grounds, peaceful surroundings, and a lovely spot for a cup of tea or coffee.
