Projects progress:

Custom arm has arrive for new 401 project. Deck is with CTC undergoing full restoration and upgrading and plinth is underway;

Complete redesign of a customer's loudspeaker crossovers after testing and measuring responses of original suppliers design (which was neither phase coherent nor anything close to linear!). Worst I think I've ever tested in 16 years. No names, no drill-pack. Let's just say every pair I've had in made by this supplier had astonishingly badly "designed" crossovers fitted;

Tannoy MG factory crossovers in for complete rebuild;

RFC Rubato order to start;

External custom crossovers for a customers' Yamaha NS1000 loudspeakers to replace originals and bypass original level control switches (as these will no longer be required).

Several TT set ups to complete.

Please note that with current workload, I won't be taking in more new work until late August this year.

Tannoy Monitor Gold RFC external crossovers now completed, awaiting client payment prior to shipping. These use PTP circuits based on my MG crossover designed to mimic the same setting as electrically level energy controls but without bothersome switches and with much improved damping factor possible due to the design. They have been precisely and carefully electrically compensated to reflect the removal of the autotransformer which isn't required.

This pair finished in oiled Sapele veneer, bronze translucent lids and full output wiring kit supplied.

First of the latest RFC commissions completed: Isolation plinth for a client's TT. 9Kg mass, very well damped both laterally and vertically. Feet have rubber washers between them and underside of plinth, and contain twin O ring seals between their two halves allowing some self alignment and lateral damping. UV stable visco-elastic bonding sheets used to bond acrylic top and base to dense valcromat middle. Makes for a superb base for use with or without a Townsend seismic sink platform for the ultimate in TT isolation.

New projects:

1. Complete turnkey custom TT set up for a valued client: Completed project will include a fully rebuilt, serviced and upgraded Garrard 401 in a custom Acoustand single arm plinth with a 10.5" Audiomods Series 6 Evo arm and supplied ready to go fitted with a ZYX 4D Ultimate series MC cart. This package will be brought together and mounted on a new design RFC designed and built CLD custom isolation plinth (broadband isolation) with a Townsend seismic sink atop. Build details will be added as I progress the project.

I have sourced an excellent donor 401 and the deck will be repainted satin black using a new CTC adjustable spindle, CNC switches and switch plate, a new idler wheel, new wiring, new CNC eddy brake disk and new suppressors. All linkages to be stripped and zinc plated, and new springs supplied througout.

2. Custom 12" MG-RS external crossovers fitted with custom inductors and high quality caps/resistors, PTP wired and housed in Sapele veneered birch ply boxes. A one off custom cable kit with captive output cable terminated in right angled XLR connectors and a loudspeaker internal wiring kit supplied comprising a sealed XLR chassis socket (IP65 and air tight) mounted to a brass plate to match the speaker's existing brass plates and terminated with new gold plated 4 pin Tannoy connectors. Build photos will be posted as I progress.

Projects recently completed:

- Garrard 301 light servicing and re-commissioning, including strip down, cleaning of linkages, re-oiling bushings, spindle and thrust bearing. Minor adjustments and new input wiring to a captive IEC socket on supplied plinth. Fitting of SME 3015R (Lovely arm) to plinth;

- Thorens TD125: Strip down, cleaning and relubricating, inspection and testing of speed control PCB as speeds inconsistent. All electrolytic caps were shot but al else healthy. Re-setting of motor chassis suspension springs to correct settings, cartridge alignment check and recommissioning/testing. Runs beautifully;

- Goldring Lenco 88: Thorough deep clean of all parts, relubed as required, minor fixes to on-off rocker switch mechanism, reassembly and testing. Minor repairs to RB200 Tonearm and re-setting with new Denon cartridge to Logfren A alignment. Runs fine;

-Hadcock GH242 strip down, cleaning inspection and testing. Repackaged ready for client sale

NEW PROJECTS JUST IN:

Detailed inspection and servicing of 1 pair Tannoy Devons (voicecoils require re-alignment and complete strip down and servicing of crossovers and switches

Servicing of a pair of Tannoy Eatons (new binding posts, complete strip down and servicing of crossovers and switches).

Having had a few carts in for RFC examination, I have been asked how I determine wear. I've attached a few photos which might help. The first shows what I look for on plan view...determining how far the side lit tell-tale "cat's eyes" have progressed. These represent the wear on the profile edges of about the top 10% of the stylus tip. Once their depth exceeds the distance between them (ir onto the radii of the tip profile) the cart is pretty well worn and any further wear usually results in the tip contacting the bottom of the LP groove, causing accelerated LP wear and distortion. The next few shots show healthy cartridges in profile and looking head on at the tip profiles.

The last shot is that of a recently examined Ortofon SPU which was compared against a new tip profile and shows very little wear after a few hundred hours. Second from last is of a healthy ZYX R50 stylus after 200 hours of use, again showing minimal wear when compared with a new one. Both show minimal cats-eye formations viewed from the top.

The demo system primary source, my 1972 Garrard 401 project has finally been completed so prospective customers wishing to hear Rubatos or Canterbury speakers can now bring their own LPs to listen. This project was a year in the making and six months to bring all the component parts together. It now ranks as one of the best TT's I've owned or heard for that matter.

Details: 401 restored and upgraded by Ray at the Classic Turntable Company: custom adjustable spindle allowing various platter thicknesses to be used (future upgrades); Chassis power coated black with all switches and front panel replaced with new CNC made aluminium items. Motor rebuilt, new wiring and suppressor.

Plinth: Jointly designed with lee at Acoustand after my brief for a twin arm, constrained layer plinth. Finished in satin black. Custom arm mounts, very inert and dead plinth due to mass and design.

12" arm: made for me by Jeff at Audiomods, this one his new series 6 evolution, and what a superbly engineered arm it is!

Sound: vastly lower noise floor than previously with the new arm able to extract every ounce of performance from a new ZYX Ultimate cartridge.

All this from UK cottage industry suppliers, proving that for truly fabulous engineering and sound quality you can rely on the talents of these UK companies and end up with something very special for a lot less than you would have to pay buying a high end imported set up. Fly the flag!

Refoam of HPD 315:

I thought I'd post some pictures of this job to show the results of not refoaming these drivers in time to prevent voicecoil damage. Luckily for the customer, I was able to repair this one and undertake a successful refoam. The issue is that once the foams deteriorate beyond a certain point (and develop pin holes or tear) the result is a significant drop in acoustic suspension above the port tuning point which leads to over excursion of the drive unit which can result in the voice coil former bashing itself off the pole piece of the motor with the resultant damage as seen below. In this case it had deformed sufficiently to cause rubbing but the customer stopped using them when this happened which saved the driver, and I was able to repair it.

The two other points worth bearing in mind if you fancy a diy attempt (not recommended if they reach this point) is the many hours needed to painstakingly remove the gunge left by broken down foams and glue on the rear of the cone which is why recones can prove easier to do. This one took several days of painstaking work to refoam properly and effect the repairs needed.

Now for the word of warning: Cadmium plating was used by Tannoy on these and MG drivers. It's fine as long as it remains stable, but any yellowing of the horn or bolts, nuts and screws and of the quadrant gasket metal surfaces is a red flag as the Cadmium has oxidised to Cadmium Sulphate which is highly toxic. You can clearly see the tell tale sings on the photos.

Gloves MUST be worn and if the oxide layer has gone powdery, so must an FFP2 mask. This one was quite bad, so I had to carefully wipe down such surfaces with ACF50 to seal ad stabilise the surfaces rendering them much safer and the end result fine for normal use.

Such refoam work with all that this entails, including testing HF and LF voicecoil alignments and adjusting as required is skilled work needing specialist test kit, so the cost reflects the hours and work done, typically £200 to £300 per drive unit and that, for the hours worked, is cheap! This should be good for another 15 years service now. Final picture is of the refoamed unit back in its Cheviot cabinet.

The other point of note is that this one had an old recone kit fitted years ago by Lockwood. The spider suspensions used are not to the same spec as originals, and often test at lower Fs (this one was 15.5Hz instead of 25Hz). Whilst this won't affect cabinet tuning point or sound, it will alter LF response near tuning slightly but below tuning unless rumble filters are used with phonostages, or other means of bandwidth limiting at low frequencies is used you will experience excessive cone movement once below 30Hz in this cabinet, especially due to warped LPs and other sources of infrasonics.

Some photos taken of a used cartridge to evaluate stylus wear. This one shows some minor signs of tip wear slightly greater on the inside face pointing to perhaps more bias force needed but has plenty of life left and is in pretty good shape.

For those of you who wish to avail yourselves of RFC's stylus inspection service, the charge is £25 per stylus exam including photos and wear evaluation.
