Ok, I understand why modeller rigs have taken over.

They’re light. They’re consistent. They don’t require a van, a chiropractor, or a mortgage.

On paper, they’re basically the final evolution of guitar rig design.

But I’ve spent enough time on stages with both to say this out loud:

A lot of them still sound like a Zoom 505 plugged straight into a PA.

There. I said it.

Yes, I know. “You haven’t heard a properly dialled in Helix / Fractal / Kemper / insert sacred box here.”

I have. But I still keep landing in the same place.

Technically impressive? Absolutely.
Convenient? Unmatched.
Mix-ready? Pretty much.

But physically? In the room? On stage?

It can feel like the guitar has been flattened into a very polite photograph of itself.

No air moving. No cabinet barking. No slightly unpredictable violence from a real amp being pushed into its natural habitat.

Just… pristine accuracy with the emotional edge planed off.

Like a Toyota Corolla — bulletproof, sensible, absolutely correct… and emotionally indistinguishable from a well-behaved washing machine on wheels.

About as sexy as your gran in a dressing gown and slippers, supervising the kettle.

Also, from where I sit (usually behind the kit) there’s also another angle:

When everything goes direct into the PA and you’re suddenly relying entirely on in-ears… the stage stops feeling like a band and starts feeling like a bunch of isolated people individually subscribed to the same audio stream.

And that’s… efficient. But not exactly inspiring.

Meanwhile, I watch guitarists spend thousands recreating the experience of a loud amp… while carefully making sure nothing is ever actually loud.

Which brings me to a thought:

We all agree that if a drummer turned up with an Alesis DM Lite electric kit and said “don’t worry, it feels exactly like an acoustic kit in the monitors,” they’d be ejected from the band almost immediately.

But somehow guitarists get to celebrate the same philosophical swap without hesitation.

Anyway.

I get the appeal. I really do.

But I can’t shake the feeling we’ve optimised guitar rigs to the point where they’ve stopped trying to sound like an instrument in a room… and started trying to sound like a convincing simulation of themselves having a good time.

And if we’re fundamentally reliant on imitating tones, will guitar sounds ever move forward at all — or are we only ever building more sophisticated ways of looking back for greatness?

Where do you sit, have we gained clarity… or quietly lost a bit of chaos that used to make it feel alive?
