What does a bookseller do on their Friday night? Head along to a poetry open mic, of course!

Amidst a hugely talented line up of poets at the Scottish Storytelling Centre I was particularly thrilled to hear Perla Kantarjian perform from her incredibly powerful collection, You Must Become Field, which I was lucky to be sent a proof copy of, and which I adored!

Perla Kantarjian is a Lebanese-Armenian poet, and You Must Become Field moves from the raw sorrow of the immediate aftermath of the Armenian Genocide, to the pressures placed upon women in the Armenian community to become mothers and replace those who have been lost, to the fellowship found in a Beirut club bathroom in 2025, where girls chat and fix each other's make-up in between airstrikes. It's made me cry at least a dozen times in the past few months of reading it, feel incandescent with rage, but equally grateful to experience the glimpse that it offers of another world and time. Above all, it reminded me of the sheer, succinct power of poetry to move and transport us.

🎭Join us to celebrate the release of A Court of Splintered Harmony🌙 Join us for our midnight release party on Monday, 26th October. We'll meeting in the bookshop from 11.30 pm to count down the minutes until A Court of Splintered Harmony is published at midnight, and will be marking the occasion with mocktails and cupcakes, crafting and trivia. Costume is entirely optional (be that dressing like a Valkyrie, in your finest Starfall attire, or warmest Winter Court woollens!)

About Ghost, Ghoul, and Little Mouse:

A charming and humorous Halloween adventure about friendship, teamwork, and finding your place, this delightful story follows a lonely little mouse who discovers that sometimes the best way to make friends is through a little clever thinking. Little Mouse lives alone in a dark, creaky old house. He dreams of having friends to share meals with, play games with, and enjoy adventures alongside.

But life is quiet and lonely - until two unexpected housemates arrive. When Ghost and Ghoul move in, they are so busy arguing that they barely notice Little Mouse at all. Both are convinced they deserve to be the house's official haunter, and neither is willing to back down.

Thank you so much to everyone who visited us today, and made it such a wonderful 💗 It takes a village to keep a bookshop thriving: incredible authors like Abi Elphinstone, who has been such a champion for our little bookshop since the very day we opened, choosing to work with us to offer signed copies of her glorious books, the customers who visit us year in, year out, or maybe even just once, spotting our bookshelves through the window as they pass, perhaps not even buying a book, just a card, but nonetheless ensuring by shopping small that we can continue to turn the lights on each year, or even just buoying me up with emotional support and excellent chats on days when I am feeling particularly Bernard Black-ish!

Also in our village are the freelancers and volunteers who help me to be in two places at once, looking after the bookshop while I'm meeting with publishers or attending conferences that fill me with new ideas , taking authors into schools, and manning our pop-ups Fringe by the Sea (another hugely supportive partner of the bookshop!)

It would be remiss of me not to thank the wider community in the book industry who continually lend their support, The Booksellers Association, the reps who keep new titles flowing onto our shelves, the authors who travel to East Lothian to hold events with us, or sign copies, and the many wonderful people in the local community we work with, from Dunbar and East Linton Libraries to Haddstock and The Harbour Chapel, to our partners in w**e, Catherine from W**e Wednesdays North Berwick and Isobel of Slonk W**e 🍷🍷

Four and a half years in, your support and continuing love for Night Owl Books gives me all the inspiration I need to hope that we'll still be celebrating Bookshop Day together for many more years to come!

Thank you to Isobel Salomon and The Cottage at Royal Terrace Edinburgh for a wonderful evening of excellent company and delicious w**e from the Canary Islands!

We enjoyed Canaries w**e, and cheese from new local deli The Big Cheese while discussing Checking Out, the witty and insightful novel by Meryem El Mehdati.

Our first w**e book club at the beautiful St Columba's bookshop in North Berwick🍷📚 Last night we met to talk about A Beautiful Family by Jennifer Trevelyan while enjoying four delicious w**es from New Zealand, introduced by Catherine from W**e Wednesdays North Berwick

There's nothing quite like w**e and books to bring people together, and I loved sitting round the table yesterday evening to hear everyone's thoughts on this compulsive, brilliantly written novel. Somehow, despite having my own bookshop, there's also nothing quite as exciting as getting to be in another bookshop after dark!
