CHARITY OF THE MONTH: SEPTEMBER ✨📚

This month, Edinburgh Community Bookshop is proud to support Space @ The Broomhouse Hub, an Edinburgh charity working to improve the lives of people and families across the south west of the city. 🫡

Space has been part of the Broomhouse community for more than 30 years. Originally established as The Broomhouse Centre following a campaign by local residents, today it delivers a wide range of services from The Broomhouse Hub; supporting children, young people, families, carers and older people.
At the heart of their work is a simple goal: creating opportunities for people to connect, learn, thrive and get the support they need within their own community.

Space delivers more than 20 different projects and services, including:
- Youth clubs, activities and support for children and young people
- Befriending and support for young people in kinship care
- Employability, training and skills programmes
- Support and respite for unpaid carers
- Activities tackling loneliness and social isolation
- The Beacon Club, supporting people living with dementia
- Community meals and practical support for people experiencing financial hardship
- Community events, groups and activities that bring local people together

The Broomhouse Hub is also home to the Coorie community café, creating an affordable and welcoming place for people to meet while providing training and employment opportunities. ☕️

Poverty, loneliness, caring responsibilities and lack of opportunity can all have a huge impact on people’s lives. Space tackles these challenges at a local level, providing practical help while building stronger connections between people in the community. What began as a project created by local residents has grown into an important community resource supporting people at every stage of life.

Throughout September, the profits from Edinburgh Community Bookshop sales will be donated to Space @ The Broomhouse Hub, alongside 100% of donations made through our till. 📚💛

CHARITY OF THE MONTH: AUGUST 📚🥳✨

This month, Edinburgh Community Bookshop is excited to support CHAI (Community Help and Advice Initiative).

CHAI is an Edinburgh-based charity that has been supporting people in the city since 1997. Their mission is simple: to ensure that no one in our communities has to endure hardship. They provide free, confidential and independent advice to people facing financial difficulties, housing problems, unemployment and poverty.

What they do:

Help people maximise their income by checking benefit entitlement and assisting with benefit applications and appeals. Provide expert advice on debt, budgeting and money management. Support people who are at risk of losing their home through specialist housing and homelessness prevention services. Help people find and sustain employment through training, job search support and confidence-building. Represent clients at tribunals and help them access grants and emergency financial assistance when they need it most.

Why it matters:

Many people in Edinburgh struggle with rising living costs, debt, insecure housing and navigating an increasingly complex benefits system. CHAI provides practical, expert support that helps people stay in their homes, access the financial help they’re entitled to and build more secure futures. Their work prevents crises before they happen and gives people the knowledge and confidence to move forward independently.
