Starting a new school year can bring lots of different feelings.

A new classroom, teacher, routine or group of classmates can feel exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming.

Books can provide a gentle way to explore those emotions, help children understand one another and remind them that everyone may need different kinds of support to thrive.

Here’s to classrooms where every child feels understood, valued and included this September. 💛

Another day, another magazine… 😂📖✨

After sharing last week’s feature, it’s so lovely to see Shine Books popping up in this month’s SEN Magazine too! 💛

A huge thank you to for featuring us and helping get Shine Books seen by even more people.

Every time someone new discovers the books, it’s another chance to start conversations, build understanding and help children feel seen and included, which is exactly why I started Shine Books in the first place.

Still never gets old seeing them in print! 🥰📚

Why did I create Shine Books?

As a former teacher and a mum, I knew how powerful stories could be in helping children understand experiences different from their own.

I wanted to create enjoyable, inclusive stories where children with different conditions and disabilities could see themselves represented - while giving families and teachers a natural way to begin important conversations.

Shine Books aren’t textbooks. They are stories about friendship, family, school, fun and all the things that make every child unique. 💛

Which topic would you most like help starting a conversation about with children?

💛 Dyslexia
💛 Autism
💛 Type 1 diabetes
💛 Dyspraxia
💛 Tourette’s
💛 ADHD
💛 OCD
💛 Epilepsy

Whether you’re a parent, teacher or professional, I’d love to know which conversations you find hardest to begin - and what resources would help.

Refresh your classroom library for September 📚

The Shine Books collection introduces children to eight brilliant characters, each with their own personality, interests and adventures.

Through their stories, children can learn about dyslexia, autism, Type 1 diabetes, dyspraxia, Tourette’s, ADHD, OCD and epilepsy - without those differences becoming the only thing that defines the characters.

Available individually, as complete sets or in school bundles.

Calling all teachers beginning to think about September… 👋

As you prepare your classroom, have you considered whether the books on your shelves reflect the different children and experiences within your school community?

Inclusive stories can help children learn about differences naturally, develop empathy and feel represented in the books they read.

Shine Books are ideal for classroom libraries, guided discussions, assemblies and PSHE lessons - or simply for children to enjoy as a story.

Looking for a simple summer-holiday activity?

Ask your child to choose a Shine Books character and create:

☀️ A postcard from their summer holiday
☀️ A picture of their perfect day out
☀️ A new adventure for the character
☀️ Three things they have learned about them

Reading activities don’t need to feel like schoolwork - sometimes the best conversations begin through drawing, imagining and storytelling.

Is it too hot to play outside today? ☀️📚

A shady spot, a cold drink and a good book can be the perfect way to slow down during the summer holidays.

Shine Books introduce children to characters with a range of different conditions and disabilities, helping to start conversations about difference, understanding and inclusion through enjoyable stories.

Which Shine character would your child choose to spend the afternoon with?

Well… it’s been a little quiet around here! 👋

The summer holidays are in full swing and, as if that wasn’t enough, our family has also moved from Scotland to Maidenhead.

This means we are currently surrounded by boxes while attempting to navigate a ten-week summer holiday. I definitely did not think that one through! 😅

Shine Books may have been a little quieter than usual, but I’m still here - and I’ve got lots to share over the coming weeks. Thank you for sticking with me! 💛
